Full Time Head of Circulation February 5, 2024

The Leonia Public Library is looking for a new Head of Circulation to provide stellar customer service to our community. We seek an enthusiastic, organized individual who loves working with people.

JOB SUMMARY:
Responsibilities include managing and supervising all aspects of the Circulation Department, answering patron questions, marketing programs and databases, assisting the public in using library technology, trouble-shooting problems, enforcing library policies, and aiding in the day-to-day running of the library. This person will report to the Library Director.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Manages and supervises the Circulation staff (including Pages and Volunteers); includes interviewing, hiring, scheduling, training, evaluating and resolving personnel problems.  
Enforces Library Board policies and circulation procedures consistently.
Develops projects, sets goals and designs future strategies for the Circulation Department alongside the Director.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs circulation duties including but not limited to charging and discharging library materials, collecting fines, registering new patrons and issuing library cards, etc.
Assists the public in the use of library resources and equipment. 
Troubleshoots issues with patron accounts, item holds, lost/ claims-returned/ missing items. 
Maintains relationships with other BCCLS libraries and manages all library-to-library issues. 
Maintains Adult DVD/CD collections, periodical/newspaper collections, and others as assigned. 
Creates promotional materials for Circulation based services - library card information, policies, item lending, etc. 
Oversees physical organization of circulation desks and neat appearance of public areas. Ensures that desk /circulation supplies are stocked and reordered as necessary, coordinating with the Bookkeeper and Director. 
Keeps current with new services, procedures, technologies and trends within BCCLS, as well as state and national libraries. 
Assists and coordinates library programs along with library staff.
Assists in maintaining the library’s website and social media along with other library staff. 
Acts as liaison to the Friends of the Leonia Library, as well as other local community organizations along with the Director. 
All other duties as assigned.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

Strong technology and organizational skills. 
Excellent interpersonal, customer service, and communication skills.
Thorough knowledge of library and clerical terminology, library procedures, use of computers and other equipment. 
Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the general public and to maintain effective working relationships with other library staff. 
Ability to create and maintain library records and files. 
Strong organizational ability. 
Ability to comprehend, analyze, interpret and enforce regulations, policies and procedures of the BCCLS consortium and the library.

HOURS:

35-hour work week position

Schedule requires morning, afternoon and evening hours, and one Saturday per month.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s Degree, 
3 - 5 years of supervisory experience either in a library or as a supervisor in a customer service-related field
MLIS preferred but not required
Bilingual Korean speaking applicants a plus

SCHEDULE: 9-13 hours per week: Fridays 2-6, every other Saturday 1-5, Sundays 12-5

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:A Passport Agent is responsible for accepting passport applications on behalf of the Department of State. The Agent verifies that the documents presented fulfill federal requirements, ensures that applications are completed correctly, and answers customer questions. The Agent will also be required to take passport photos, act as a Notary Public, and fulfill general clerical tasks as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITY:

The Passport Agent must be able to:

1. flourish in a fast-paced, customer-oriented environment;

2. memorize extensive Department of State rules and regulations;

3. complete web-based training;

4. remain detail-oriented under pressure;

5. provide excellent customer service;

6. communicate effectively with customers;

7. complete clerical tasks online and using Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and Word;

8. operate office equipment such as the scanner, copier and library

point of sales system

9. maintain effective working relationships with associates and customers.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Computer skills required. Previous customer service experience preferred.

Passport application acceptance agents must:

1. Be a United States citizen age 18 or older;

2. Be free of any federal or state felony convictions;

3. Be free of any misdemeanor conviction for crimes relating to breach of trust or moral turpitude, i.e., embezzlement, identity theft, misappropriation, document fraud, drug offense, or dishonesty in carrying out a responsibility involving public trust; and

4. Not be on parole or probation relating to any federal or state convictions.

SALARY: $17.00 per hour

Adult Services/Programming Librarian – Union Public Library – Union, NJ

The Union Public Library serves a diverse community of more than 60,000 residents in two locations and is conveniently located in Union Township. We are currently seeking a full-time Adult Services Programming Librarian to join the busy Reference Department. With a newly constructed, state-of-the-art building opening in October 2024, this is the perfect time to join our team!

This position consists of planning public programs in libraries, communicating with the public and creating eye-catching promotional materials. Candidates must be able to work under and meet tight deadlines. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Programming: Organizes, schedules and hosts library programs that consist of a cultural, informative, educational and/or artistic nature for adults; facilitates adult summer reading program. As well as, budgeting, administration, implementation, statistical reporting, and evaluation of programs
  • Outreach: Promotes all library programs from both buildings, sends information to local media and community organizations and liaises with relevant community organizations and groups to build and maintain a network of community contacts as a representative of the library to promote literacy and participate in outreach as appropriate.
  • Communications/Design: Creates and designs modern and eye-catching printable flyers and calendars to advertise programs. Familiarity with Canva or similar graphic design programs is required.
  • Provide accurate reference and readers advisory to patrons in person, electronically and by phone, utilizing the online catalog, books, reference sources, bibliographies, databases and the Internet.
  • Provides technology assistance to patrons using public computers or online resources.
  • May provide collection development in designated areas.
  • Handle patron concerns and complaints with an emphasis on good customer service.
  • Attends workshops and training sessions, stays well-informed of current trends in libraries and helps innovate ways to better serve the community.
  • Exchanges ideas, information, and opinions with supervisors to formulate policies, procedures, programs, etc. to provide high quality services.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Schedule includes one evening per week and one Saturday per month (occasionally more as needed).

Qualifications:
-A Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from a library program accredited by ALA. Recent graduates are encouraged to apply. Hold or be eligible for a NJ Professional Librarian Certificate. 

-Preferred: At least 2 years of experience in a public library.

-Demonstrated ability to be part of a team.

-Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both in writing and verbally.

Compensation:
Starting salary $58,000/per year (full time-35 hours). Generous benefits include: medical, dental, and paid time off.

SCHEDULE

Approximately 8 hours per week- afternoon/evening hours with some flexibility on exact schedule. Saturday availability is required. Flexibility to add hours as needed preferred.

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Shelves library materials in the proper order and location in an efficient manner
  • Does shelf reading to ensure that materials are in the proper order
  • Checks shelves for library material when requested by the circulation staff
  • Refers patrons needing assistance to the appropriate staff member(s)

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION

  • Able to alphabetize beyond the first letter of a word
  • Able to perform numerical filing well beyond the first digit of a sequence of numbers
  • Able to learn and understand the Dewey Decimal system and other library filing systems
  • Able to understand and follow written and/or oral multi-step instructions
  • Able to maneuver library book trucks weighing in excess of 120 lbs.

Requirements

  • A high school degree.  Some college courses are desirable
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Must love meticulous details and be able to learn and follow the library’s shelving and classification systems to shelve materials in specific order
  • Must be able to work Saturdays, and evenings and daytimes on an on-demand basis
  • Must have good computer skills, knowledge of Microsoft Office, Google Drive, and use of internet, be comfortable with technology and able to learn new applications quickly
  • Ability to work with small amounts of money and provide change for patrons
  • Must be able to push, pull, move, bend low, reach high, and/or lift a minimum of 15 lbs. of materials; push or pull fully loaded (50 – 100 pounds) book carts 
  • Capable of shelving books and other items on all levels of shelving from floor to a height of almost seven feet (by standing on a stool, if necessary)
