Part Time Youth Services Associate - Dover Library April 2, 2024

Dover Free Public Library is looking for a part time Youth Services Library Associate to join our team. If you are a creative thinker, self-starter, and are passionate about serving the community please do not hesitate to apply.  

The assignment is a part-time position of approximately 26 hours/week including some evenings, and participation in the weekend rotation. Standard holidays, paid vacation and sick time provided in accordance with the library personnel manual.  Salary is commensurate with experience and meets NJLA recommendations. 

The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four year institution and is currently enrolled, or is accepted in an accredited MLS program.  Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree and 2-4 years experience working with children and teens will also be considered.

Bilingual preferred (Spanish-English).

LIBRARY ASSOCIATE DEFINITION:

Under the direction of a professional librarian, takes the lead in organizing and implementing the technical or public service aspects of one or more library programs such as the development and coordination of events, patron services or collection management; does other related work.

Some examples of work performed:

  • Develop a regular schedule of programs, clubs, meetings and events.
  • Assist in maintaining website, newsletter and social media channels.
  • Demonstrate creativity and innovation to enhance, initiate, and direct the operation of tween and teen’s services and programs both in a virtual and face-to-face format.
  • Person may be providing bilingual story time, as well as other children’s programming
  • Collaborate with the Children’s Librarian in gathering usage statistics, patron feedback and community input to evaluate programs, collection needs, and enrichment activities provided to patrons under the age of 18 years old.
  • Work independently.
  • Willing to develop knowledge of library theory, principles, techniques, trends and developments in the library profession.
  • Work harmoniously with patrons, staff and supervisors.

MONTCLAIR LIBRARY DIRECTOR April 2, 2024

Our municipal library has been improving lives for over 130 years, through words, ideas, and community-building, by providing opportunities for lifelong learning, discovery, and public engagement.

Our facilities consist of a main building in downtown Montclair and the historic Bellevue Avenue branch, a Carnegie library listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Upper Montclair. The library has a 2024 budget of $4.5 million and has 50 staff members.

Usage of our library has been growing dramatically in terms of circulation, patron visits, and program participation. The librarys innovative programming includes an Adult School offering more than 200 classes annually, provocative author talks by the likes of Maggie Haberman, Colson Whitehead, and Ann Patchett, and a wide variety of activities for children and adults. Our patrons are racially diverse and from all economic circumstances. Our space is welcoming, and our programming is progressive.

We are looking for a director to lead us in sustained growth and evolution, as we continue to adapt to changing technology and the needs of our community. Our director should be collaborative, outgoing, innovative, and knowledgeable about libraries, finance, literacy, and technology. The director is supported by a committed board, successful foundation, imaginative collaborators, highly skilled staff, and engaged public.

Montclair is ranked among the best towns in NJ for its culture, arts, and education. A beautiful suburban town just 30 minutes outside of New York City, Montclair has a population of around 40,000. It has long celebrated its diversity, a feature that has attracted many to the community. The large number of writers, journalists, actors, and business leaders who live in Montclair are an invaluable library resource.

Position Overview

The position requires the ability to handle complex administrative, supervisory, and professional duties requiring adherence to professional standards of accuracy, confidentiality, integrity, and tact. Under the general direction of the Library Board, the Director has responsibility and authority for organizing and managing the Library operation and for planning, directing and coordinating its program of service to the community.

The Director works a standard 35-hour week and participates in various meetings and work-related functions outside the standard workweek.

Compensation includes a salary of between $110,000 and $130,000, depending on experience, and a full package of benefits.

Qualifications

Education and Professional License

  • Master of Library Science from an American Library Association accredited institution
  • Valid Professional Librarian license from Thomas Edison State College

Experience

  • Minimum of five years of increasingly responsible managerial experience, primarily in libraries. Preference for a candidate with at least two years of experience as a Library Director.

Most Critical Attributes

  • Demonstrated ability to manage library staff and library finances
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and productively with library staff and Board of Trustees, town government, and community

Additional Knowledge and Abilities

  • Knowledge of theories, principles, and techniques of library and information science

  • Ability to work harmoniously with subordinates, associates, and superior officers

  • Desire to meet and serve the public
  • Ability to travel on library business; drivers license and access to car required for local travel
  • Ability to develop new programming that meets the communitys changing needs
  • Ability to efficiently manage and administer existing and new library programs within constraints imposed by available funding, personnel, equipment, and supplies
  • Ability to confer with staff, library administrators, board members, and other interested persons about budgeting, standards, library techniques, and related problems
  • Ability to plan and carry out surveys and studies of existing public library services
  • Ability to analyze the basic book needs of the library, apply approved book selection methods, and assist librarians in book selection, classification, cataloging, and with other technical administrative problems
  • Ability to speak before professional and nonprofessional groups regarding issues facing public libraries
  • Ability to oversee preparation of clear, accurate, and informative narrative and statistical reports on all library activities, containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations
  • Ability to oversee the establishment and maintenance of essential records and files
  • Ability to adopt new electronic and/or manual recording and information systems as needed.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Under the supervision of the Assistant Library Director, the Adult Services and Outreach Librarian coordinates library publicity and marketing, performs community outreach, and contributes to reference service, collection development, and programming.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Outreach 

  • Plan, schedule, and attend outreach events in the community
  • Function as the library’s liaison to various municipal departments, including the Police and Parks, Recreation and Community Services
  • Manage the library’s Homebound Delivery Service

Marketing 

  • Create digital content promoting library programs and services for the library’s website and social media
  •  Write and disseminate press releases
  • Create and disseminate print flyers, library newsletter, and brochures 

General 

  • Perform collection development in the library’s print collection
  • Plan, schedule, and host programs in collaboration with community partners
  • Provide reference assistance at the library’s service desk
  • Create and maintain monthly library displays
  • Perform other duties as required

REQUIREMENTS:

  • A Master's degree in Library or Information Sciences in a library program accredited by the American Library Association.
  • Valid certification as a Professional Librarian issued by Thomas Edison State University.
  • Knowledge and usage of the following: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, WordPress, and Squarespace.
  • Must have the ability to travel to off-site community outreach events.
  • Exceptional customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to work two evenings per week and alternate weekends.
  • May be required to successfully pass a background check and drug testing.
  • Must be physically and mentally capable of performing the job tasks.
  • Must successfully pass a 90-day probation period.

PT Library Assistant March 24, 2024

The Margaret E. Heggan Free Public Library of Washington Township in Sewell, NJ seeks candidates for the position of PT Library Assistant to work a range of 12-20 hours per week. The schedule includes afternoons, evenings, and regularly scheduled weekends. Evening and weekend hours are mandatory and are not negotiable. The library is open seven days per week throughout the year. 

This position reports to the Circulation Supervisor. The selected candidate, if not a New Jersey resident, will be required to establish New Jersey residency within a year of appointment in accordance with the New Jersey First Act. Pay is $16.39 per hour. 

All part-time library staff are eligible for accrued sick time based on the requirements of the New Jersey Paid Sick Leave Law. The selected candidate must enroll in the DCRP pension system, which is a mandatory payroll deduction of 5.5% of base salary.

Responsibilities:

  • Providing excellent customer service at all times
  • Charging and discharging library materials while following policy and procedural guidelines
  • Issuing new library cards and renewing existing accounts
  • Searching for library materials and processing hold requests
  • Answering telephones and assisting callers as needed
  • Billing and accepting payment for library overdue fees and material charges
  • Shelving books, straightening shelves, and reading shelves
  • Processing computer guest passes and registering patrons for library programs via online software
  • Operating a cash register, photocopy machine, and a facsimile machine
  • Tactfully and politely ensuring that library patrons are adhering to Library Rules of Conduct as needed
  • Assisting with coverage at the children’s desk
  • Performing other duties as assigned at direction of supervisor

Requirements:

  1. High school diploma
  2. Ability to communicate well and follow directions while being detail-oriented
  3. Excellent computer skills with the ability to learn new software quickly

Preferred:

  1. Flexibility with schedule and ability to work additional hours during staff absences
  2. Prior experience working in a library and using the Dewey Decimal Classification System or prior experience working with the public
  3. Knowledge of and interest in reading materials and other items that may be borrowed at a public library

The Fort Lee Public Library, serving two culturally diverse communities of 40,000, seeks a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our dynamic Children’s Services Department. The qualified candidate should have a strong interest in and experience with programming, literature and services for children.  A proactive nature and knack for creative problem solving are essential.  Knowledge of children’s literature and experience running children’s programs ages 0 to 6; storytime experience, is preferred.
