Two thousand books, on their own, is just a big pile of books, two hundred books, with a librarian, is a library.

Program Description:  Over the last four years Urban Librarians Unite has made a huge impact despite being a tiny organization with minimal resources. They've been part of advocacy fights that have won hundreds of millions of dollars in budget restorations, have spoken up for librarians in NYC schools, and have responded to Hurricane Sandy. They have established Mini Libraries and dispatched a Volunteer Library Brigade to get librarians out into the streets. Christian Zabriskie, the founder and executive director of ULU, will discuss leaning into the controlled crazy and how a small group of dedicated people can make a big impact even with no money. He will talk about what worked, what didn't work and how libraries can serve their communities in unexpected ways.

Biography: Christian Zabriskie is the Founder and Executive Director of Urban Librarians Unite. He has worked in just about every front line job you can have as a public librarian and a few as an academic, as well. Christian was named a “Change Maker” as a Library Journal Mover & Shaker in 2012. He is the co-author of Grassroots Library Advocacy: A Special Report available from ALA Editions. Christian is very happy in his day job as an Assistant Community Library Manager for Queens Library.
