Full-Time Adult Services Librarian at Bayonne Public Library January 25, 2024

Bayonne Public Library is a newly renovated, century-old Carnegie library interested in continuing to build a new, more active library culture in Bayonne. A large focus of this job is working closely with patrons to conduct research requests, assisting with basic technology needs, and actively participating in imagining and creating new programs and services that support the further development of a new library culture in Bayonne. Responsibilities will include providing support to public and staff at public service desks, assisting patrons in selection and location of services and books, assisting fellow librarians & staff with programming & outreach, and collaborating on the creation & maintenance of a large body of archival materials. Fluency in Arabic or Spanish would be a helpful skill, but is not required. Full-time, 35 hours per week, with two nights per week and 2 Saturdays per month. 

Requirements to Apply:

  1. An NJ Professional Certificate or ALA-accredited Masters in Library & Information Science. 
  2. Residency in the State of New Jersey within one year of hire in accordance with New Jersey Revised Statutes § 52:14-7.

DESCRIPTION

  • Sort and shelve library materials in the proper order
  • Empty the outside book drop
  • Does shelf reading to ensure that materials are in the proper order
  • Check shelves for library material when requested by the circulation staff

  • Refer customers needing assistance to the appropriate staff

REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to perform extensive alphabetizing beyond the first letter of a word
  • Ability to perform numerical filing beyond the initial digit of a sequence of numbers
  • Ability to learn the Dewey Decimal system and other library filing systems
  • Ability to converse, speaking clearly, concisely and courteously

Part-Time Library Assistant January 23, 2024

Job Summary:

The Springfield Free Public Library is looking to hire a part-time library assistant to work at the circulation desk on Saturdays from 9-5 pm (and during July and August: 9:30am-1 pm) with additional available shifts in our circulation desk and technical processing department.    

Qualifications / Salary:

Requirements for the position include having a high school diploma or equivalent, enjoying working with the public, being comfortable working with computers, and being physically able to shelve books. The starting salary is $15.13 per hour, in accordance with the New Jersey minimum wage for 2024. Paid Intern-South Jersey January 22, 2024

Gloucester City Library now has a paid librarian intern opportunity for current library school student or recent MLIS/MLS graduate. 

Description

The intern will get hands-on experience on daily library services including but not limited to answering reference questions, assisting at the Front Desk, helping with computer lab, developing library collection, and more. The candidate will need to be tech savvy to be able to help patron with using e-resources, library devices, and computer related questions. 

Evening and weekend shifts are required.

About 16 working hours per week.

Requirements: 

Strong customer service skills and interpersonal skills; must have team-working qualities to positively interact with other employees; knowledge of current trends in library services; strong awareness and interest in learning and implementing current library technologies. 

Current MLIS/MLS student who have completed most credits or recent graduate.

The Twin Rivers branch of the Mercer County Library System is looking for you!  We are seeking to fill a full-time, 35 hour per week position in the Youth Services Department of our small community branch. 

This is an excellent opportunity for a librarian with a strong vision and interest in building relationships to provide an exciting home for youth services and programming within this small, friendly community that has lots of families with young children! We are seeking an energetic librarian who has a track record of working with children, a passion for youth and teen services, plus a strong commitment to providing excellent public service.  

Our community is growing and changing, with many recent arrivals to our area.  The youth services librarian will be responsible for finding innovative ways to engage with these new community members. The librarian will provide core programming and readers’ advisory to children and parents in this diverse community; do outreach to schools, Head Start, and more; publicize programs and library initiatives; develop and weed the YS and YA collections; and run the youth Summer and Winter Reading programs. 

Additional responsibilities may include preparing statistical reports on monthly departmental activities and use, creating bulletin boards and displays, maintaining the collection budget for YS/YA materials, writing occasional library blog articles, staying current on new developments in the library field, providing reference assistance to patrons of all ages, and contributing to the annual branch report and library social media opportunities. The position includes one evening per week and Saturdays in rotation.

The successful candidate will be enthusiastic and forward thinking. The librarian should be comfortable planning a consistent slate of programs that encourage children to read and have fun.  Strong organizational skills, program management skills, and a sense of humor are essential.  Demonstrated experience using technology (including library automated systems, online reference resources, and Microsoft Office programs such as Word and Excel) is necessary. 

The candidate should have flexibility for scheduling programming at days and times that children and young adults will find convenient, and expect to participate in outreach in the schools and community.  Strong oral and written communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines are needed.  As a member of a small branch, willingness to be part of a team environment and collaborate with coworkers is a must.

This position requires a master’s degree in library/information sciences from an ALA-accredited institution, but applications from graduate students already enrolled in such a program will be considered in the library associate title.  A New Jersey Professional Librarian’s Certification is required for those who have attained the required master’s degree.

This title is affiliated with AFSCME 3566. The current salary range for Librarian 1 is $42,465 – $68,586 in 10 steps.

Are you interested in becoming a part of the MCLS Information Technology Department and being on the forefront of innovative services to library staff and patrons? Then this might be the job for you! We are seeking a full time Librarian 1 to fill the Technology Instructor vacancy.

This is a full time 35 hour a week position primarily responsible for all aspects of the computer training program within the Information Technology Department, located in library administration at the Lawrence Headquarters Branch. This position reports directly to the manager of Information Technology. The IT department currently offers approximately 25 classes per month for adult learners, covering such topics as: mouse basics, Windows 11, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint), and various programs and apps on the internet including Google applications. In addition to the public classes for patrons, the department oversees staff training and the technology instructor would be responsible for curating a regular list of available webinars and other training opportunities for staff. The staff training component also includes developing original classes offered for staff both in person and virtually (to be recorded, edited, and shared with staff), recording of all staff training for the state stats, and new staff onboarding.

Daytime, evening and weekend training classes are scheduled in the IT classroom. This position supervises one Library Associate and occasionally a summer intern.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, creating curriculum for the patron and staff computer classes taught at the Lawrence Headquarters Branch that meets Northstar Digital Certification standards and is responsive to the needs of patrons; producing and revising existing instructional handouts and monthly class calendar; submitting a monthly (and annual) report on classes offered; coordinating patron training across the system; and maintaining a database of courses and course participants. Participation in the library’s social media and blog, as well as outreach, which consists mainly of working with local groups that request in-branch and virtual training programs.

Qualifications include, but are not limited to:

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills – at ease speaking in front of groups and good at explaining complicated ideas simply, clearly, and patiently.
  • Extensive knowledge of PC software and the internet.
  • Working knowledge of PC hardware.
  • In-depth knowledge of the most recent versions of Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint and MS Publisher.
  • Knowledge of library databases, electronic resources, and system offerings.
  • Ability to learn new technology/software and apply new information to the classes.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as with a small team.
  • Excellent time management and organization skills.

As a part of the interview process applicants will be asked to conduct a training session in the IT classroom, located at the Lawrence Headquarters Branch, on a topic of their choosing.

Librarian titles require an MLS degree from an accredited institution and a NJ Professional Librarian Certificate. This Civil Service title is covered under AFSCME local 3566. Candidates without the required degree, but with enrollment in a MLS program, considerable teaching experience and knowledgeable in the Microsoft Office Suite are encouraged to apply.
