LibraryLinkNJ, in partnership with the New Jersey State Library and the New Jersey Department of Education, is proud to launch the first two modules in a new learning series designed for anyone who works with or supports students and lifelong learners. Whether you are a librarian, educator, parent, or community leader, these free resources will help you communicate effectively with learners of all ages about the essential skill of information literacy.

Module One: “What is Information Literacy?” This module introduces the concept of information literacy and explains its importance in today’s information-rich world. Participants will learn clear definitions, see real-world examples, and explore steps to help learners understand the importance of reliable sources and understanding information. |

Module Two: “How Do I Determine What Information I Need?” Before seeking or evaluating information, it is vital to define the exact need. This module guides participants through recognizing and articulating an “information need,” providing strategies to help learners clarify their questions, identify what they already know, and determine the best ways to find answers. |
These modules are part of New Jersey’s statewide initiative to integrate information literacy into K–12 education. In January 2023, the state became the first in the nation to mandate this instruction, placing responsibility on local districts for implementation. With a limited number of licensed school library media specialists, classroom teachers will often lead the effort, supported by public libraries, higher education institutions, and community partners.
Funded through a three-year implementation grant, these resources are designed to be practical and adaptable, enabling educators, families, and community leaders to work together in building strong information literacy skills.
The first two modules are now available for use by teachers, librarians, and educators of all sorts for use in facilitating conversations across New Jersey.
