Introduction to MarcEdit
Online via Zoom
Event Description
Metadata is the invisible architecture connecting our collections to our community, but inconsistent or "dirty" catalog data can leave vital resources hidden from your patrons. Join us for an approachable, jargon-light introduction to MarcEdit - the completely free, powerful software suite that acts as a digital sandbox for your library records before you upload them to your catalog. Whether you are cleaning up everyday batch imports or managing vendor records specifically tailored for your library's catalog, MarcEdit helps you maintain clean, consistent data. This webinar is designed for library staff who are interested in making their cataloging work more efficiently. While some examples will be focused on public libraries, these tips and tricks transfer to an academic library audience. A background in cataloging is not required.
Presenter: Matthew Kelly has been working as the Technical Services Librarian at the Stanly County Public Library for over 10 years, managing the metadata and acquisitions processes behind the scenes. They’ve used MarcEdit as part of their workflow for a number of years and have designed tasks within that program to automate much of their pre-upload cataloging process.
Learning Objectives:
Navigate MarcEdit’s main functions to safely stage and preview record edits.
Apply bulk edits to quickly correct, add, or delete MARC field data.
Spot repetitive cataloging tasks that can be streamlined to save time.
