Position Summary: 

The Livingston Public Library is seeking an enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and compassionate individual to join our team as a full-time Librarian in our Adult Services and Acquisitions department.  The successful candidate will focus on the continued development of the library’s collection for our diverse population of 31,000+ residents. We seek an individual who is experienced and knowledgeable in current library trends, challenges, and can successfully lead in all areas of collection development and reader advisory.

The ideal candidate will  provide excellent customer service and professional reference  services, along with contributing to the department’s robust monthly programs.  Participation in the Library’s social media posts is a must.

This is a full-time position and includes one night a week (Tuesday) and a rotating weekend. The position reports to the Head of Adult Services and Acquisitions.

Essential Duties: 

Responsibilities will include a full range of duties in the Adult Services & Acquisitions Department with a focus on collection development, reference services, programming, and community engagement. 

  • Selects, evaluates, and maintains library print materials for the adult fiction, nonfiction, and non-print collections based on a variety of review sources and reader preferences.
  • Processes and links books in the Library’s catalog. 
  • Answers reference inquiries and assists with helping patrons with various library technology such as: computers, fax machine, copier, and scanner.
  • Assists patrons with digital library resources and e-library platforms, including the catalog and other online resources. 
  • Coordinates with Adult Services & Acquisitions Department Supervisor to develop, plan, schedule, organize, and implement low-cost library programs, Adult Summer Reading, a book club, or innovative services for adults. 
  • Provides readers advisory services for adults including in-person requests, as well as displays and book lists. 
  • Makes brochures, flyers, and graphics to promote library events and services, using Canva.
  • Participates in social media initiatives such as Instagram, blog posts, and podcast segments. 
  • Researches new information needs and develops creative responses using innovative resources and  delivery service methods. 
  • Engages in continuing education opportunities in order to develop and maintain job skills. 
  • Assists with day-to-day operations of the Library, which may include circulation, registration, and shelving.
  • Experience with LibraryHQ is a plus.
  • Participates in professional library organizations.
  • Provides coverage for services desks and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with collection development best practices and ability to recognize current reading, viewing, and listening interests of adults
  • Excellent reference skills. 
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Ability to interact with and assist the public in a friendly and responsive manner. 
  • Possess and show a demonstrated willingness and ability to work as a “team player” within the specific department and organization. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to execute innovative library services for adults and seniors, especially in regard to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Knowledge of current technologies, electronic resources and virtual services including social media. 

Education and Special Requirements: 

  • A Masters of Library Science from an ALA-accredited university.
  • Candidates currently enrolled in a Library or Information Science program at an ALA-accredited university will be considered at an adjusted salary rate. 

Starting salary for a degreed candidate is $60,000. Position includes medical, dental, and a generous leave package.
