Department: Adult Services
Reports To: Head of Adult and Patron Services
The Part-Time Adult Services Assistant (ESL) is a member of the Adult Services Department, with a primary focus on developing, coordinating, and delivering ESL (English as a Second Language) programs for adult learners. This role includes teaching group classes, managing volunteer tutoring services, serving as the library’s liaison to Literacy Volunteers of Pascack Valley, and providing public service at the Adult Services desk. The Assistant plays a key role in expanding access to language learning and supporting a diverse community of library users.
Key Responsibilities:
ESL Program Support & Instruction
- Plan, develop, and teach group ESL classes for adult learners at varying proficiency levels
- Design and adapt curriculum to meet diverse language abilities and learning goals
- Evaluate learner progress and adjust instruction as needed
- Incorporate conversation practice, digital literacy, and real-life skills into lessons
Collection Development (ESL Resources)
- Select, evaluate, and maintain ESL-focused library materials to support adult language learners
- Identify and recommend books, multimedia resources, learning kits, and instructional tools aligned with learner needs and program goals
Volunteer Coordination
- Recruit, train, and support volunteers for one-on-one ESL tutoring
- Match learners with tutors based on skill level, goals, and availability
- Provide ongoing guidance and resources to ensure effective tutoring relationships
- Monitor and support tutor-learner engagement
Partnership Coordination
- Serve as the library’s primary point of contact for Literacy Volunteers of Pascack Valley
- Coordinate referrals, communication, and collaborative programming
- Strengthen partnerships to enhance ESL and adult literacy services
Public Service
- Provide general assistance to library patrons, primarily at the Adult Services desk
- Assist at other public service desks as needed to support overall library operations
- Assist with technology use, job search resources, and general inquiries
- Support a welcoming, inclusive, and customer-focused service environment
- Contribute to overall Adult Services operations as needed
Program Administration & Outreach
- Schedule classes, tutoring sessions, and related activities
- Track attendance, learner progress, and program outcomes
- Maintain accurate records and prepare reports as needed
- Promote ESL services through outreach and community engagement efforts
Qualifications:
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in education, TESOL, linguistics, or related field
- Experience teaching ESL or working with adult learners
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and customer service skills
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and work independently
- Comfort assisting patrons with basic technology and general inquiries
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends
- Must be able to work in a public library environment, which may involve prolonged periods of sitting, standing, computer use, and lifting up to 25 lbs.
- A valid New Jersey driver’s license is required at the time of appointment.
Preferred:
- TESOL/TEFL certification or equivalent
- Experience coordinating volunteers or tutoring programs
- Experience in a public library or community-based setting, Library experience within the BCCLS consortium
- Multilingual skills are a plus
Schedule:
This part-time hourly position may include day, evening, and weekend shifts (approximately up to 20 hours/week). Flexibility is required as schedules may change to meet the library’s needs.
