Full Time Librarian 1, Technology Instructor

SALARY: U19: $43,527 - $70,300

SCHEDULE: This is a 35 hour per week position and includes at least one evening per week and weekend hours in rotation. May include providing classes on some of the four County-observed holidays that the branch is open.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Mercer County Library System is seeking a full-time, enthusiastic, knowledgeable, adaptable and forward-thinking Technology Instructor in its Technology Training Program. The ideal candidate will bring positivity and patience to this important role. This position reports directly to the Manager of Information Technology and is responsible for developing and delivering training programs on a variety of digital learning literacy-based topics and library technologies, as well as creating engaging learning experiences for both patrons and staff, assessing student progress, and contributing to the overall effectiveness of library technology initiatives.

Presently, the Technology Instructors offer approximately 25 classes per month for adult learners, covering such skills as internet literacy, career readiness skills using Microsoft software, Google apps, cover letter best practices, mouse basics, Windows 11, Microsoft Suite and various other programs. In addition to the public classes for patrons, the department oversees staff training, curating a bi-weekly list of available webinars and other professional training opportunities for staff. 

The staff training component includes developing original classes offered for staff both in-person and virtually (to be recorded, edited and shared with staff) and tracking all training to be submitted to the NJ State Library for inclusion into the required annual statistical report. The Technology Instructor currently offers daytime, evening and some weekend classes, and works in tandem with a second technology instructor, collaborating with the larger IT Department team members and branch managers to identify patron and staff needs, delivering them in a way that best serves the library’s diverse communities and employees.  

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Creating curriculum for the patron and staff technology classes taught at the Lawrence Headquarters Branch that meets Northstar Digital Certification standards and is responsive to the needs of adult learners.
  • Encouraging the use of library technology resources and services among patrons and staff.
  • Keeping abreast of the latest trends and advancements in library technology to ensure the training program remains relevant and effective.
  • Working with the larger IT Team and other library staff members to integrate technology into library services and programs.
  • Offering guidance and support to library staff and patrons on using library technology and resources to ensure that messaging and materials are presented consistently.
  • Assessing the effectiveness of training programs and making recommendations for improvement.
  • Participating in the development and revision of curriculum of classes, instructional handouts, outreach materials and monthly print and digital class calendar.
  • Ensuring that training programs and materials are inclusive and accessible to all learners.
  • Submitting a monthly (and annual) report on classes and attendance.
  • Maintaining a database of courses and course participants.
  • Outreach consists of working with the County of Mercer departments, local groups that request in-branch, on-site, and virtual training programs.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • MLS/MLIS degree from an ALA-accredited institution and a valid New Jersey Professional Librarian's Certificate are required.
  • Experience in teaching or training, preferably in a library or classroom/educational setting is desirable
  • A valid NJ driver’s license
  • As part of the interview process candidates will be required to present a 15-minute training session in the Technology Training Classroom, located at the Lawrence Headquarters Branch, on a topic of their choice.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills - at ease speaking in front of groups and adept at explaining complicated ideas simply, clearly, and extremely patiently.
  • Extensive knowledge of PC software, the internet, and related technologies.
  • Working knowledge of PC hardware.
  • In-depth knowledge of the most recent versions of Windows, Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and Canva.
  • Strong knowledge of library databases, electronic resources, and system offerings.
  • Awareness of library website and social media platforms.
  • Participation in the library’s social media campaigns, outreach, blog posts and LibGuides.
  • Ability to learn and adapt to new technology/software and apply new information to the classes.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as with a small team.
  • Excellent time management and organization skills.
