Information Services Librarian (FT) – South Brunswick Public Library

The South Brunswick Library, located halfway between the metropolitan hubs of NYC and
Philadelphia, is home to a diverse, growing community that values all the services the Library
provides. Our staff is dedicated to providing excellent customer service through innovative
programming, community engagement and outreach, and our Mobile Branch.
Our Library is in its final year of a multi-million construction project to expand and repurpose our
existing building. We are excited to bring new team members aboard as we build our next
chapter at the South Brunswick Public Library. Renovations will include a new auditorium,
state-of-the art meeting room, an expanded Teen Room, group study rooms, an Innovation Lab, and more.
We are seeking an innovative, motivated librarian to join our Information Services team. This position is responsible for creating a welcoming, accessible atmosphere at the Information Desk, providing all library users with assistance in reference, readers’ advisory, information literacy, and in the use of library materials and reference resources. The ideal candidate possesses excellent communication skills; enthusiasm, courtesy, flexibility, and a sense of humor. This position will include a weeknight and a rotating weekend shift.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Provides exemplary information and reference service to the public at various service points, including the Information Desk, public computer areas, and via telephone and chat reference.
  • Assists patrons in locating library materials and accessing library and community services and maintains a broad knowledge of print, electronic and community resources and their availability and location.
  • Assists patrons with the operation and maintenance of library equipment including lendable devices, public computers, wireless printing, scanners, and fax machines.
  • Maintains a current working knowledge of books, authors, and trends in library services and programs.
  • Develops creative ways to share information with the public; develops and promotes library resources and services to specific user populations, including physical and virtual displays, finding aids and related activities.
  • Evaluate community needs and identify opportunities for programs, services, and collections.
  • Coordinate and present library instruction sessions. Manage curriculum and make changes as needed to improve outcomes.
  • Develop and maintain a portion of the collection, including selection of materials and weeding.
  • Collect, maintain, and report statistical data as needed.
  • Work cooperatively with colleagues and other library departments to develop plans and initiatives that support the library’s mission and goals.
  • Possess exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain and foster cooperative and courteous working relationships with the public and colleagues.
  • Support library outreach, representing the Library and its services in the community.
  • Attends continuing education programs.

Requirements:

  • Master of Library Science (MLS) or equivalent from an ALA-accredited university. L/IS students who are at least halfway through the program and have relevant library experience will also be considered. A New Jersey Professional Librarian’s Certificate is required for those with the degree.
  • One year of increasingly responsible professional library work, preferably with experience in adult services.
  • Proven ability to provide outstanding customer service to a wide range of ages and abilities.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form with patrons and staff.
  • Proven ability to engage patrons and staff in the promotion of library programs and services.
  • Currency and fluency with technology trends in public libraries; excellent digital literacy skills including proficiency with use of mobile devices.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Knowledge and proficiency of spoken and written English, including style and editing standards.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Fluency in a language other than English.
  • Knowledge of Polaris and Google Workspace.
“Good Faith” Salary, Range, or Rate of Pay

Salary commensurate with experience. The 2024 range for a Librarian position is $60,286 – $62,783. The Library is currently negotiating its 2025-2028 union contract with CWA 1031. South Brunswick Library provides a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental and prescription benefits. Full-time librarians receive 22 vacation and 15 sick days per year, in addition to paid holidays and personal days.
