Teaneck Public Library is seeking an enthusiastic, innovative, and customer-focused Part-Time Adult Services Librarian to join our team and help us continue to serve the diverse needs of Teaneck’s adult population.
Under supervision from the Head of Adult and Patron Services, the Part-Time Adult Services Librarian is responsible for providing general library services to adults, developing and delivering engaging programs, and managing the library’s adult collections. This position will collaborate with library staff and community partners to ensure that Teaneck Public Library remains a vital resource for learning, personal enrichment, and connection. The ideal candidate will be passionate about public service, have strong communication skills, and demonstrate creativity in their approach to library programming and services.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Welcome and help patrons of all ages, mainly at the Adult Services Desk, with flexibility to assist at any public service desk or department.
- Provide reference, technology, and readers’ advisory services.
- Develop and organize dynamic adult programs that address community interests and needs.
- Manage and enhance the library collections, including weeding/shelving.
- Collaborate with colleagues to design creative library displays, events, and outreach initiatives.
- Assists with interlibrary loans and local history collection.
- Performs other duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Master’s Degree in Library Science (or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited program. Candidates currently pursuing their MLS/MLIS degree may also be considered.
- NJ Professional Librarian’s Certificate issued by Thomas Edison State University.
- Proven experience in customer service, reference and technology assistance, adult programming, and collection development.
- Ability to communicate clearly, courteously, and effectively with library patrons and staff.
- Strong proficiency with technologies, social media, and marketing tools.
- Creative skills, including the ability to design promotional materials (flyers, social media graphics, etc.) using Canva or similar tools.
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
- A passion for public service, community outreach, and promoting lifelong learning.
- Experience with BCCLS and Polaris LEAP is preferred, but not required.
- Experience in English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction is preferred, but not required.
SCHEDULE:
The schedule for this position is up to 20 hours per week, including regular evening and weekend coverage on a rotation basis.
The ideal candidate must be flexible with their hours, as the work schedule is subject to change according to the needs of the library.
