The Piscataway Public Library is currently seeking a part time Junior Library Assistant for Technical Services for our busy User Services department. Under the direction of the Supervising Library Assistant, the individual selected would perform a variety of technical services functions for the library system as well as circulation and service related duties.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION OF THE JOB
- Checks all new materials and links their item-level bibliographic records into the library’s automated system.
- Transfers materials between branches.
- Writes up book slips for all donations and checks for records in the database.
- Maintains and updates the procedures manual for data conversion and collection codes list.
- Assists in library inventory and database clean-up projects.
- Participates in the physical processing of all new materials, print and non-print, including bar-coding, labeling, converting, property stamps, magazines, etc. as well as repairs and recovers all damaged books. Replaces AV cases, boxes, and bags.
- Maintaining order and appearance in the library and the collection as needed
- Prioritizing customer service
- Understanding, following and promoting established library policy and procedures.
- Involvement in professional development and or community building opportunities and activities.
- Emphasizing teamwork and communication within the department for the benefit of library users and the organization as a whole.
- Performing circulation staff duties including charging/renewing/discharging materials; entering and updating library cards; handling issues with overdues and other account information; and handling money through accepting fees.
- Handling and routing system, consortium and ILL holds.
- Carries out other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION
- High School Diploma or possession of an approved High School Equivalency Certificate
- Some knowledge of clerical methods and practices, and the use of office equipment
- Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions
- Ability to communicate courteously and clearly with customers and staff
- Ability to learn routine operations of computer equipment
- Knowledge of Windows environment, basic typing and mouse operation, use of email and standard office computer programs
Preference will be given to candidates with :
- Experience in the technical services functions in a public library, including the circulation, processing and linking of materials into library automated systems.
- Familiarity with Polaris LEAP or similar integrated library system.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- The ability to sit, stand, walk, and stoop in provision of library service
- The ability to handle, reach for, and carry materials of up to 20 lbs.
- Dexterity to operate keyboards and other office equipment
- Visual acuity to read print and computer screens
- Vocal ability to communicate clearly and courteously with customers, co-workers and groups outside the library
- The ability to write clearly and effectively
- Hearing to perceive information at normal spoken word levels
- The ability to travel between libraries and to attend occasional meetings in other locations
SCHEDULE
Up to 20.5 hours per week to include daytime hours and rotating shifts on Saturdays and Sundays.
SALARY
$ 22.49 per hour
