Job Title: Part-Time Library Assistant
Department: Circulation
Reports To: Circulation Supervisor
Schedule: Part-time; includes evenings and weekends as assigned
Position Summary
The Part-Time Library Assistant provides courteous and efficient service to library patrons at the circulation desk. This position is responsible for performing routine clerical and customer service duties related to the circulation of library materials, maintaining accurate records, and assisting patrons in using library resources, technology, and services.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide excellent customer service to all library users.
- Check materials in and out using the library’s integrated library system.
- Register new patrons and update existing library accounts.
- Collect and record fines, fees, and payments accurately.
- Assist patrons with locating materials, placing holds, and basic catalog searches.
- Answer and direct phone calls and in-person inquiries courteously.
- Maintain organization of the circulation area, including shelving, shifting, and straightening materials.
- Assist with library card renewals, patron account issues, and overdue notices.
- Prepare materials for delivery between branches.
- Support general library operations, including opening and closing procedures.
- Uphold all library policies and maintain confidentiality of patron records.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Prior experience in customer service, clerical work, or library service preferred.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Bilingual (English and Spanish or Haitian Creole) preferred.
- Ability to learn and use library software, databases, and office technology.
- Attention to detail and accuracy in handling transactions and records.
- Ability to follow directions, work independently, and handle multiple tasks.
- Must be dependable, punctual, and able to work collaboratively with staff and the public.
- Must be able to travel between branch locations, including Main, Elmora, LaCorte, and Eport.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry books and materials up to 25 lbs.
- Ability to stand, bend, reach, and move book carts throughout the workday.
