The Ridgefield Library is seeking a creative, organized, and community-minded individual to lead services for children from birth through 8th grade, including their families, teachers and caregivers. This position oversees the Juvenile Department, including collection development, programming, public service, and outreach that fosters literacy, curiosity, and lifelong learning in a fun and welcoming environment.
The ideal candidate is fun, flexible and able to wear many hats, passionate about working with youth, delivers exceptional customer service in a library setting, and creates engaging, innovative programs for families. Strong interpersonal, multi-tasking, and technical skills are essential.
This position reports directly to the Library Director, and is subject to a probationary period.
Key Responsibilities include:
- Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging programs for children from birth through 8th grade, including storytimes, STEM activities, crafts, book clubs, weekly events, and the Summer Reading Program.
- Develop, manage, and maintain the children’s collection, including foreign‑language materials, through selection, evaluation, and regular weeding.
- Provide reference and reader’s advisory services; assist students with research and information‑gathering skills.
- Assist patrons in locating youth materials, program information, and other library resources.
- Create reading lists, displays, and promotional materials; maintain the library’s JUV webpage, social media presence, and digital communications.
- Set up, maintain, and clean program spaces, materials, and equipment.
- Provide basic computer and printer assistance, including simple troubleshooting.
- Build and sustain strong relationships with local schools through visits, book talks, class programs, and coordinated outreach to the Ridgefield community.
- Represent the library at community events and support both in-house and outreach initiatives.
- Promote literacy and ensure collections, services, and programs reflect the diverse needs and interests of the community.
- Apply and uphold library policies and procedures in all areas of service.
- Assist at the adult reference and circulation desks as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned or needed.
Qualifications
- MLS or MLIS, or MLS / MLIS student
- Experience working with children or teens is highly preferred
- Experience in developing and delivering programs or events
- Creative, flexible, and positive attitude
Schedule: Up to 28 hours per week, including 1 evening per week and Saturday rotation.
