Getting Started with Gender-Inclusive Cataloging

Following our popular program on Creating a Gender-Inclusive Library, we are proud to announce a program specifically on Gender-Inclusive Cataloging. 

Often times, metadata by and about LGBTQIA+ is created by people who aren't familiar with trans or gender diverse issues. Sometimes, this metadata can under- or misrepresent trans and gender diverse people or subjects. Also, trans and gender diverse people can be misnamed or misgendered in metadata, putting them at risk of harm or violence.

Resting at the center of this work are information professionals whose work necessitates that they be keenly aware of social shifts in culture and practice. This work, as is no surprise to actively working librarians, often comes with dangers. To make queer inclusion visible in your library is to run the risk of criticism and even politically fueled budgetary attacks.

While this presentation cannot offer perfect solutions or best practices to engage in queer inclusion, it will offer suggestions for workers in libraries and cultural heritage institutions who create metadata about trans and gender diverse people, communities, resources and/or topics, especially as this language is ever-evolving.

K.R. Roberto (he/they) is a former cataloger with an academic library background. He has a PhD in library and information science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
