About The College of New Jersey
Founded in 1855, TCNJ is a highly selective, public, primarily undergraduate institution that has earned national recognition for its commitment to excellence. Emphasizing a residential experience for its more than 7,400 full-time students—30% of whom describe themselves as members of groups traditionally underrepresented in the academy—TCNJ is one of Barron's 75 "Most Competitive" American colleges, and U.S. News & World Report's number one public institution of its kind in the northern region of the country. TCNJ in 2006 was awarded a Phi Beta Kappa chapter, an honor shared by less than 10 percent of U.S. colleges and universities. Students benefit from a 13-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio and an average class size of 21 students, which has contributed to the college attaining a first-year-to-sophomore retention rate of 94%; a 4-year graduation rate of 76% (4th highest in the nation for public institutions); and a 6-year graduation rate of 86% (among the highest in the nation). TCNJ has also received national recognition for the adoption and successful implementation of the teacher-scholar model for our faculty. This model promotes deep engagement with our students in research, scholarship, and creative activity. In part because of TCNJ’s intentional integration of research into undergraduate curricula, an increasing number of our graduates have pursued and completed doctoral degrees over the past decade.
A strong liberal arts core forms the foundation for programs offered through TCNJ's seven schools: Arts & Communication; Business; Education; Engineering; Humanities & Social Sciences; Nursing, Health & Exercise Science; and Science. The college offers focused graduate programs in business, counseling, education, English and humanities, integrative STEM, and nursing and public health. TCNJ faculty members and librarians share a commitment to liberal learning. TCNJ is located within approximately one hour, by train, of New York City and Philadelphia. The college's self-contained campus is set on 289 tree-lined acres in suburban Ewing Township (northeast of Trenton). The lush, wooded campus is known for its natural beauty. R. Barbara Gitenstein Library was rated 4th-best in the nation by the Princeton Review shortly after its opening in 2005. This 5-story, 135,000-square-foot facility serves as an intellectual, cultural and social hub on campus. In addition to housing traditional library collections and services, the building provides 26 group study rooms, two instructional computer labs, a cafe, late-night study area, and a 105-seat multi-purpose auditorium. The library's collections are approaching one million volumes–physical and ebooks–that have been carefully selected by subject-specialist librarians and faculty to support course offerings and to provide a broad representative collection across many disciplines. The library has access to more than 75,000 periodical titles in a variety of formats.
