FT Supervising Librarian, Adult Services

STARTING SALARY: $75,000 – $85,000
HOURS: 35 hours per week
Monday: 9 am to 5 pm; Tuesday: 1 to 9 pm; Wednesday: 9 am to 5 pm; Thursday: 8:30 am to 4:30 pm; Friday: 9 am to 5 pm; Every third Saturday: 9 am to 5 pm (off on Wed for Sat).

Position Overview
The Ridgewood Public Library seeks an energetic, forward-thinking Supervising Librarian to lead our Adult Services and Reference Center. This position plays a key role in shaping how our library connects with the community—through vibrant programs, a dynamic collection, and accessible, high-quality service. The ideal candidate brings creativity, curiosity, and strong leadership to a collaborative team environment. Excellent customer service is at the heart of this role. As part of the Library Director’s management team, the Adult Services Supervisor collaborates across departments to deliver cohesive, innovative library service. This is an opportunity to lead a talented staff, champion adult learning, and help shape the evolving role of the Ridgewood Public Library as a cornerstone of community connection.

Major Responsibilities

Library Operations, Administration & Services

  • Oversees daily operations of the Adult Services and Reference Center.
  • Manages library services including: Passport Center, ESL, Bolger Heritage Center, Library of Things, Repair Cafe, Museum Passes, Study and Meeting rooms, and Technology.
  • Works with the team to develop, implement, and market adult programs and special events.
  • Develops and manages budgets for staff, collections, and technology.
  • Contributes to strategic planning, policy development, reports, and grant writing.
  • Serves as Person-in-Charge in the absence of library leadership.

Staff Leadership & Development

  • Supervises, trains, and evaluates Adult Services staff, technology instructors, and volunteers.
  • Fosters a culture of innovation, learning, and professional growth.

Public & Staff Technology Training

  • Leads the Technology Training Center, planning and teaching digital literacy classes for the public and staff.
  • Researches and integrates new online bibliographic and research systems.
  • Mentors staff and volunteers in emerging technologies and customer-facing tech support.
  • Represents the library at professional meetings, conferences, and community outreach visits.

Collection Development

  • Curates and maintains the adult nonfiction collection, balancing literary quality, popular appeal, and community interests.
  • Analyzes circulation and trend data to guide purchasing and weeding decisions.

Programming, Marketing & Outreach

  • Designs, implements, and evaluates adult programs that inspire reading, creativity, and connection.
  • Creates promotional materials, press releases, and in-library displays to showcase new services.
  • Builds partnerships with community organizations to expand the reach and relevance of library services.

Reference & Reader Services

  • Provides expert reference and reader advisory assistance at the service desk.
  • Champions equitable access to resources, lifelong learning, and information literacy.

Data & Evaluation

  • Tracks and analyzes program attendance, circulation, and other key metrics to inform decision-making and demonstrate outcomes.

Performs additional responsibilities as assigned in support of the library’s mission.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • Minimum of three years of progressively responsible public library experience, including supervisory responsibilities.
  • Proven leadership and organizational skills.
  • Strong commitment to public service and community engagement.
  • Excellent communication, teaching, and interpersonal abilities.
  • Proficiency with integrated library systems, online databases, and emerging technologies.
