Reasonable Accommodations in the Workplace and the Law Against Discrimination

Brought to you by the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights

The New Jersey Law Against Discrimination (LAD) requires employers to make adjustments to job or work requirements that make it possible for employees to perform the essential functions of their job and enjoy equal employment opportunities. Under the LAD, reasonable accommodations apply to disability, religion, and pregnancy and breastfeeding. This training will provide an overview of what reasonable accommodations are, who is eligible for them, and how requests for accommodations are initiated and carried out. Through case studies and other interactive exercises, participants will examine topics including the costs and benefits of accommodation, the interactive process, non-apparent disabilities, assistance animals in the workplace, telework as an accommodation, and the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act.

Registrant Expectations from the NJ Division on Civil Rights:

  • Participants should log onto training as individuals, not in groups
  • Participants should use a laptop or desktop computer when possible – phones and tablets are permitted but discouraged
  • Participants should have their cameras on when possible
  • Participants are expected to take part in polls and conversations
  • Participants are expected to arrive on time
