The Language of Experience: Understanding and Implementing User Experience Design in Your Library

with

John Blyberg, Assistant Director for Innovation and User Experience, Darien Library, Connecticut

Program Description:   Many librarians think that user experience (UX) design means installing the latest technology, having the slickest website, knowing the best apps, or building the hippest makerspaces. These are great things to strive for, but are only part of a successful constellation of services. UX design strives to create something that is more than the sum of its parts. It is not just great customer service; it is applying empathy and compassion in a structured way so that our users come away with full hearts and satisfied minds.

After participating in this program, you’ll be able to:

  • Speak knowledgeably about ways to apply UX design in your libraries today;
  • Measure the impact of UX design in your library;
  • Refine the way you apply UX design in your community of users.

Biography:  John Blyberg (B.A. English, University of Maine, 1998) is the Assistant Director for Innovation and User Experience at the Darien Library in Connecticut. He was formerly the System Administrator and Lead Developer for the Ann Arbor Library District in Michigan. Prior to working in libraries, John was the IT manager for the North American office of the British car company, Lotus Engineering.

John has had an intense interest in technology since disassembling and escaping from his crib when he was fifteen months old, but has spent the last ten years applying that passion in more constructive and professional ways. He is an open source software advocate and considers unfettered collaboration and participation the primary intent of information technology.

John is proud to work with a first-class group of people at Darien Library. In December 2008, he formed the User Experience Department to completely redefine how customer service and interaction is handled and delivered to library staff and users.
