Adult Services Librarian, Makerspace, Piscataway Public Library

Description: 

The Adult Services Librarian is responsible for developing and delivering makerspace programming , supporting STEM programs, and reference and customer service to all ages. The Adult Services Department embraces a team approach to support outreach and special projects. The Adult Services Librarian reports to the supervisor of Adult Services. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Offering assistance to effectively meet the informational needs of users of all ages, by providing reference, readers’ advisory, and computer support while employing a welcoming demeanor
  • Planning, coordinating, executing, and evaluating creative programs that meet the interests and needs of adults in the community as well as encouraging use of the makerspace and associated equipment
  • Manage makerspace appointments, services, and schedule
  • Provide safety orientations and equipment training for makerspace users and library staff
  • Contribute to the development of makerspace procedures and policies
  • Maintain library makerspace equipment including basic/routine upkeep and troubleshooting
  • Participates with the Supervisor in the formulation, development, and completion of departmental and library-wide objectives
  • Provides instruction on information literacy and technology skills to individuals, visiting groups and classes as required
  • Strengthening connections with local organizations and representing the library at community events
  • Continuing education to update professional skills and active participation in professional library organizations
  • Serves as library liaison with community organizations, library organizations, and other groups as required
  • Provides basic troubleshooting on computers
  • Performs all other duties as assigned
  • Maintains accurate inventory of equipment and makerspace consumables

Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Library Science (or equivalent) from an ALA accredited program and NJ Professional Librarian’s Certificate. 
  • Demonstrated experience in the following areas: customer service, providing reference and technology assistance, adult programming, collection development
  • Ability to communicate clearly, courteously, and effectively with library patrons and staff
  • Operational knowledge of makerspace equipment & software (3D printer, laser cutter, Silhouette, heat press, sewing machines, etc.) preferred
  • Experience implementing or coordinating library services preferred

Physical Requirements

  • The ability to sit, stand, walk, and stoop in the provision of services to the public
  • The ability to handle, reach for, and carry materials of up to 20 lbs
  • Dexterity to operate keyboards and other office equipment
  • Visual acuity to read print and computer screens
  • Vocal ability to communicate clearly and courteously with customers, co-workers, and groups outside the library
  • The ability to write clearly and effectively
  • Hearing to perceive information at normal spoken word levels
  • The ability to travel between libraries and to attend occasional meetings in other locations

Computer Skills:

  • Competency in the use of the latest relevant technology to manage and deliver information services
  • The ability to use library automation software and G-Suite applications

Schedule:

  • 35 hours per week.
  • A regular schedule will include at least one evening per week and rotating weekend coverage.
  • Eligible for sick, vacation, and personal days.

Compensation:

This is a full-time salaried exempt position, with a minimum starting salary of $71,551. Piscataway Public Library offers generous paid leave, health and dental insurance, PERS, and a commitment to staff training and development.
