Substitute Library Assistant – Raritan Public Library

The Raritan Public Library is seeking a Substitute Library Assistant to help staff our Circulation Desk as needed.

This position is on-call, with no set weekly hours. Scheduling is based on the needs of the library, including covering staff vacations, sick days, and other absences.

Duties Include:

  • Assisting patrons with checking in/out materials.
  • Sorting and shelving library materials.
  • Creating and renewing library cards for patrons.
  • Assisting patrons with technology, such as databases, the library catalog, and computer applications.
  • Collecting payments for copies, faxes, fines, and lost or damaged items.
  • Performing opening and closing procedures for the library.
  • Answering phones and performing general office tasks like photocopying, downloading, and scanning materials.
  • Answering questions from patrons, including providing reader's advisory and general reference.
  • Assisting with the promotion of library programs and services.
  • Assisting with programming and outreach.
  • Helping patrons locate materials in the collection.
  • Emptying the book drop.
  • Assisting with weeding and collection management.
  • Cleaning circulation materials and shelves as needed.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for serving the public.
  • Ability to readily adapt to a variety of assignments and work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team.
  • Detail-oriented.
  • Basic computer skills, including the ability to navigate a Windows environment, use a web browser, and standard Microsoft software.  Proficiency with computers and digital devices is essential.
  • Fluent in English to perform the duties of the position. Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
  • Ability to handle frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to follow written and oral directions.
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds and maneuver 50-pound library carts.
  • Ability to retrieve library materials from both high and low-level shelving.

Experience and Education:

  • Previous experience in an educational, retail, or customer service environment is required. Previous library experience is a plus.
  • High school diploma or equivalent certification.

Compensation:

  • $17.50/hour
