Job Description: The Scotch Plains Public Library is seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic Part-Time Youth Services Librarian to engage and support our teen patrons (grades 6-12) while assisting with general Youth Services responsibilities. The ideal candidate will be passionate about fostering a welcoming environment for our teen patrons and empowering teen volunteers.
Hours: up to 25 hours per week, including one evening and one Saturday per month
Responsibilities:
- Perform all ordering and deselecting for a varied collection of young adult materials, including print and digital media.
- Develop and implement programs and activities specifically for teens, including book clubs, workshops, outreach, and special events.
- Onboard, train, and supervise an active corps of teen volunteers, including an active teen advisory board.
- Provide reference and readers’ advisory services to teens and younger patrons.
- Create and maintain teen book displays and booklists.
- Create promotional materials and utilize social media and other tools to engage and inform teens and families about library programs and services.
- Collaborate with local schools and community organizations to promote library services and programs.
- Create and update content for the teen pages on the library website; create and update event information on the library website calendar.
- Participate in staff meetings and professional development opportunities as needed.
- Foster a safe and inclusive space for all youth patrons.
Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in Library Science
- Previous experience working with teens and children in a library, educational, or community setting is highly desirable.
- Strong knowledge of young adult and children’s literature, as well as current trends in youth culture.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect with a diverse group of young patrons.
- Experience in customer service and collection development.
- Proficiency with library technology and digital resources.
- Ability to communicate clearly, work independently and as part of a team.
Working Conditions:
- Must be available to work at least one evening per week and one Saturday per month.
- Flexibility to adjust hours as needed for special events or programming.
