Breaking Down Barriers Unconference

NJLA Diversity & Outreach Section invites all library workers and community partners to attend a free unconference where you will leave feeling energized and excited to serve your community in new and inclusive ways. The Breaking Down Barriers Unconference, co-sponsored by NJLA, LLNJ, and NJSL, will take place on Thursday, November 17, 2022 from 9:00am to 3:00pm at Elizabeth Public Library, Elizabeth, NJ.

All voices and experiences are welcome, as participants are invited to propose discussion sessions on topics including but not limited to:

  • serving underserved communities
  • improving access
  • services for unhoused patrons
  • diversity, equity & inclusion
  • outreach services

Our keynote address will be delivered by Rev. Dr. Anthony Forbes, Manager of The Hoboken Shelter, Founder of Street Life Ministry, and Commissioner on the Hoboken Housing Authority Board of Commissioners in Hoboken, NJ. Rev. Forbes is a tireless advocate for the unhoused as well as an ardent library supporter. He will share with us the ways the library has impacted the lives of his Guests, as well as his own life, and will discuss the ways that library workers can break down barriers to access for those who need our services most.

In addition to proposed discussions, we will offer a workshop session with topics including:

  • Putting Patrons First: Imagining a Fine Free Future with Library Cards for All
  • What’s Up With WhatsApp? Meeting Your International Community Where They Are
  • Libraries Save Lives: Harm Reduction Tools as Information Technology

Please note that lunch will not be provided to unconference attendees. This is to ensure the unconference is free of charge for all attendees. Please refer to the Lunch information to plan accordingly.

Before traveling, please read the Location & Parking information about the unconference venue.
