Part Time Youth Services Librarian 1, Hopewell Branch, Mercer County Library System

The Mercer County Library System is seeking a part-time 19 hour per week position in the Youth Services Department of the Hopewell Branch.

We are seeking an energetic librarian with a passion for children’s and teen’s services and a strong commitment to providing excellent public service. The candidate should be open to scheduling programming at days and times that children and young adults will find convenient, and expect to participate in outreach in the schools and community.  Willingness to be part of a team environment and collaborate with the adult services and circulation librarians are a must, as are strong oral and written communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

The successful candidate will be enthusiastic, flexible, and forward thinking.  Strong knowledge of literacy, child development, and literature for children and teens are vital in this role.  The youth services librarian will contribute, along with the rest of the Youth Services staff, to a vibrant and well-rounded Youth Services Department.

Hours/Schedule:

This is a 19 hour per week position and includes at least one evening per week and Saturdays in rotation.

Salary Range: $23.74 – $38.34 p/hr.

Responsibilities:

  • Answering reference questions from patrons of all ages and providing readers’ advisory.
  • Planning and implementing a variety of programs for children of all ages, including story time and craft programming.
  • Supervising teen volunteers and contributing to the Teen Advisory Board.
  • Accessing databases and other reference materials and instructing patrons how to do so.
  • Participating in collection development.
  • Assisting with outreach events and initiatives.
  • Creating bulletin boards and displays.
  • Contributing to library social media campaigns in a meaningful and enthusiastic way.
  • Participating in the Library’s blog.
  • Assist in decorating the branch for various holidays and themes.

Requirements:

An MLS/MLIS degree from an ALA accredited institution and a New Jersey Professional Librarian’s Certificate are required. Students enrolled in an MLS program with a significant amount of coursework completed may also be considered.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Computer proficiency, including a working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Knowledge or previous experience with Sirsi Workflows library software and Library Aware desirable.
  • Reading materials and providing verbal assistance to library users in the English language.
  • Manual dexterity to handle books, software, and a variety of other media formats.
  • Intermittent sitting, standing, and walking; occasional bending, reaching, and stooping; lifting and carrying items weighing up to 35 lbs.; pushing or pulling objects (book carts) weighing up to 100 lbs.
  • Vision sufficient to view computer screens and spine labels under a variety of light conditions.
