Signing Basics

LibraryLinkNJ is proud to partner with Signing Basics to offer "Customer Service Signs for Librarians: Part 2," a series of workshops which will teach library staff how to better communicate with members of their community who are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing.

"Customer Service Signs for Librarians: Part 2" consists of three 45-minute trainings taught by an experienced ASL instructor.  This training continues to expand upon the signs learned in Part 1, and also covers:

  • Practicing the ASL Alphabet, including fingerspelling
  • Signing formal introductions and pleasantries
  • Formatting questions using the Yes/No ASL signing structures: Who, What, When, Where, Why, Which, How, and How Many
  • Constructing ASL-signed sentences using the Time, Object, Subject, and Verb format and incorporating more vocabulary
  • Gaining a better understanding of "Do and Do Not Do" strategies when interacting with Deaf people
  • Learning appropriate responses to direct customer service questions

LibraryLinkNJ is please to sponsor this throughout 2024 and 2025, with more dates to be added in the future:

  • Wednesdays, November 13th, 20th, 27th, 2004 — 10am-10:45am
  • Thursdays, May 1st, 8th, 15th, 2025 — 10am-10:45am

Included are interactive handouts featuring all the signs learned during the training, along with video tutorials allowing attendees to continue learning after the training is concluded. Sessions will not be recorded.

Registration for this three-week series is limited to 15 people, and is only available to those who have successfully completed Customer Service Signs for Librarians: Part 1. Registration information will be shared directly with attendees via email. Please email Stephanie Sendaula with any questions.

Please note: By registering to attend this program, you agree to the LLNJ Code of Conduct.
