The Clifton Public Library (Passaic County) has a full time librarian opportunity in its very active Children’s Department. We are looking for a service oriented professional with a Master’s degree in Library or Information Sciences from an ALA accredited program and a New Jersey Professional Librarian’s Certificate to join our team. Excellent communication skills and competency in the use and instruction of technology are a must. The Children’s Department serves the age range from babies to tweens. You will be providing outstanding reference, reader’s advisory, collection development, programming, and outreach services to a diverse public.
The Children’s Department staff strives to develop and maintain relationships with local elementary and middle schools, preschools and day cares, and community groups and organizations. Clifton is a diverse community, in which 70% of the children enrolled in the public school system speak a language other than English as a first language in their homes, including Arabic, Turkish, Gujarati, and Spanish. Proficiency in a second language that reflects this diversity is a plus.
The City of Clifton is civil service and this position is for the title of Librarian 1. Full time positions include health benefits and paid holiday, sick, vacation, and personal days. The starting salary for Librarian 1 is $58,000. Under the “New Jersey First Act,” new hires must reside in New Jersey within 1 year of starting. A full time schedule consists of 35 hours per week, including at least one evening shift per week and every other Saturday. Exact schedule to be determined.
Graduate students enrolled in an ALA accredited Master in Library and Information Studies or equivalent program may be considered if graduation by June 2025 is expected. The temporary title for graduate students would be Library Associate at $24 / hour, with consideration for Librarian 1 after professional licensure is obtained. Part-time hourly work is possible for Library Associates while in school.
Now more than ever, we are seeking someone who is flexible and creative with their working environment and resources. Work assignments will include time in both our Main Library and Allwood Branch, as well as at outreach events. We are working towards resuming Sunday hours, which typically run October – mid-December and mid-January – May. This provides an opportunity for additional work on separate, seasonal schedules.
The Clifton Public Library includes the Main Memorial Library and the recently renovated Allwood Branch. It serves a city population of 90,000 and is a member of the PALS Plus consortium.
Please submit a letter of interest and a resume to Christine Althawabta, Administrative Clerk, in the Business Office (email to althawabta [at] cliftonpl.org). Application will be accepted until the job is filled.
