Part-Time Librarian: Tues/Thurs – New Providence Memorial Library
New Providence Memorial Library is looking for a friendly, knowledgeable, service-oriented librarian to moderate Book Groups and work the Reference desk, helping with various adult library services duties. Responsible for a variety of tasks including answering reference questions in person, via phone and email, assisting with collection management projects, helping patrons and presenters, and moderating at least two monthly book groups.
Requirements
- MLS or MLIS from ALA accredited program
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
- Service-oriented outlook, able to work with all ages of the public
- Must be able to work regular Tues and Thur mornings with availability to fill-in other shifts
- Must have good computer skills, knowledge of Microsoft Office and use of internet, be comfortable with technology and able to learn new applications quickly
- Ability to work Reference desk shifts independently, sometimes as person in charge
- Must be able to push, pull, move, bend low, reach high, and/or lift a minimum of 15 lbs. of materials; push or pull fully loaded (50 – 100 pounds) book carts
- Must be able to exercise good judgment in public service situations and multitask
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team
- Ability to run reports, and help patrons use library technology
- Knowledge of popular books and desire to discuss books and share that knowledge with others
- Ability to plan, moderate, and summarize two very active book groups, including promotion and recaps via email newsletters and social media posts
Job Description
- Answer Reference and Readers Advisory questions in person, via phone & email
- Moderate two monthly Tuesday morning book groups: one with assigned reading, and one with open sharing of any books read
- Complete tasks and projects assigned by the Head of Adult Library Services
- Run reports, create book lists, create displays and assist with other collection development needs
- Assist patrons with research, catalog searching, and public computer use.
- Provide technology instruction and troubleshooting for ebooks, databases and printing
- Prepare meeting rooms for programs (assist with A/V setup, move tables & chairs, etc.)
- Check out and place holds on materials, and answer phones when circ staff needs assistance
- Assist with displays, program publicity, and collection management projects
- Assist with occasional programs, book groups, and outreach events
- Some shifts will be person in charge
- Other duties as assigned
Hours and Salary
You must be available Tuesday mornings and Thursday mornings (9-1), plus have availability to fill-in for other open shifts. Pay range begins at $31/hour with degree, depending on experience. Open to students working toward MLS/MLIS degree with 20+ credits at a lower rate (increased upon degree completion).
