The Teaneck Public Library is seeking a creative, tech-savvy, and service-oriented individual to join our Youth Services Department as a Library Assistant. This position involves supporting all aspects of Youth Services, including assisting with dynamic programs for children and teens. The ideal candidate will bring fresh ideas, and contribute to the development, implementation, and promotion of new and exciting programs.
Responsibilities:
- Welcome children, teens, and caregivers at our busy Youth Services Desk and serve ages 0-19 and caregivers.
- Offer reference/readers’ advisory help and friendly assistance.
- Assist with shelving, restocking displays, and maintaining the overall appearance of the Children’s and YA library areas.
- Assist with programs and services and prepare publicity.
- Assist in developing and maintaining the library’s newsletter and social media presence through creative content and marketing materials.
- Support outreach efforts and events.
- Perform other tasks as assigned by the department head or director.
Qualifications:
- A genuine enthusiasm for working with children, teens, and families from diverse backgrounds.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Knowledge of children’s and young adult literature and ability to assist children, teens, and caregivers with reader’s advisory.
- Demonstrated experience in planning, developing, leading, and evaluating engaging children’s programs.
- Desire to work in a collaborative environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills and a creative problem-solving attitude.
- Ability to resolve patron concerns within authority granted by the supervisor.
- Excellent communication skills (orally and in writing) – whether you’re chatting with a toddler, a teen, or a caregiver.
- Extensive and creative technical skills, including good command of standard office software, Google Workspace, social media, internet searching, and use of library information technology. Familiarity with Canva and the BCCLS catalog is a plus.
- Ability to shelve materials and perform some lifting.
Requirements:
Strong computer skills required. Creative and comfortable working directly with children, tweens and teens. Light lifting and bending required. Library experience (especially within BCCLS) desired, but not required.
Schedule:
This position is an hourly part-time position of approximately 20 hours per week and includes day, evening, and weekend shifts.
The ideal candidate must be flexible with their hours, as the work schedule is subject to change according to the needs of the library.
