Programming and Outreach Librarian

Maplewood Memorial Library seeks a motivated and organized reference librarian to take the lead in developing and coordinating programs and events, and to help our vibrant library meet people where they are through deliberate outreach. An engaged librarian who enjoys public service, they participate in collection development, regularly scheduled reference desk slots and  perform other related duties as assigned, including participation in staff meetings. They demonstrate a commitment to sustainable workplace and professional practices. This is a dual report position - reporting to the Director on programming and the Assistant Director on all other duties.

Specific job duties include:

Programming:  

  • Develop, schedule, promote, and facilitate library programs, including regularly scheduled book groups and art and music receptions.   
  • Coordinate regular art exhibits 

Collection Development and Technical Services

  • Select and maintain adult collections of print and electronic materials  through regular purchasing and weeding for dedicated sections of the collection, with a discerning eye towards the information needs and interests of the community
  • Update and/or provide call numbers for new materials to ensure optimum browsing access

Adult Services and Outreach

  • Provide reference, reader's advisory, and technology assistance to patrons at all adult service desks, and via email, chat and online reader’s advisory
  • Promote library services in all possible ways and reach out to non-library users both in and outside of the Library

IT and Technology

  • Troubleshoot problems with desktop computers, laptops, portable devices, and printers
  • Stay up to date with new technologies which may enhance library services
  • Instruct library users in computer use and applications, both in a classroom setting and one-on-one
  • Assist with Library website

Other tasks may be assigned as needed.

Scheduling

Library scheduling requires an assignment of one evening per week and Saturday hours.

Qualifications

  • ALA accredited MLIS and NJ Professional Librarian Certification, or proof of current enrollment
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Strong computer skills
  • Expertise with Canva and/or other graphic design platforms
  • Ability to regularly bend, lift, push and pull up to 25 lbs of books and other materials
