Under the direction of the Supervising Library Assistant for User Services, Performs a variety of circulation and service related functions as well as providing an excellent customer experience. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Charging/renewing/discharging materials in an automated system
  • Entering and updating library cards in an automated system
  • Handling issues with overdues and other account information
  • Handling money through accepting fees
  • Handling incoming reserves and pulling expired holds
  • Answering the phone and responding to directional questions

REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION

  • High School Diploma or possession of an approved High School Equivalency Certificate
  • Some knowledge of clerical methods and practices, and the use of office equipment
  • Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions
  • Ability to communicate courteously and clearly with customers and staff
  • Ability to learn routine operations of computer equipment
  • Knowledge of Windows environment, basic typing and mouse operation, use of email and standard office computer programs

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • The ability to stand, sit, walk, and stoop in provision of library service
  • The ability to handle, reach for and carry materials up to 20 lbs.
  • Dexterity to operate keyboards and other office equipment
  • Visual acuity to read print and computer screens
  • Vocal ability to communicate clearly and courteously with customers, co-workers and groups outside the library 
  • The ability to write clearly and effectively
  • Hearing to perceive information at normal spoken word levels
  • The ability to travel between libraries

SCHEDULE

Up to 12 hours per week, including daytime and evening hours as well as rotating shifts on Saturdays and Sundays. 

SALARY : $20.28 per hour

Part Time Librarian 1, West Windsor Branch, Mercer County Library System May 2, 2024

Please accept this as notification of the anticipated vacancy of the position of Part Time Librarian I at the West Windsor Branch, Mercer County Library System.  This 19 hour per week position during the school year requires the following schedule, Saturday 9-5, Sunday 12-5, and Monday 12:30-8:30. In the summer the Sunday hours shift to Friday.

This position will require an MLS/MLIS degree from an ALA accredited institution and a NJ Librarian’s Certification. Students enrolled in an MLS program with a significant amount of coursework completed will also be considered, making this an excellent opportunity for students working on a library and information science degree to get work experience

The successful candidate should be enthusiastic, forward thinking, resourceful, flexible, efficient, conscientious, and detail-oriented.  The candidate should have excellent communication and customer service skills, exhibit friendly professionalism, be able to effectively handle multiple projects simultaneously, contribute new ideas that will help the branch to better serve its community, and provide outstanding reference service. 

The candidate will be expected to create/facilitate adult programming for a diverse public; assist the Virtual Programming Coordinator in discovering, scheduling and facilitating virtual programming; market programs and library services; and do outreach to the community.

Typical responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Searching the library catalog and locating library materials;
  • Accessing databases/other reference materials and demonstrating their use to patrons;
  • Answering reference questions presented in person, electronically, and by telephone;
  • Using a computer, scanner, copier, projector, and microfilm equipment;
  • Providing one-on-one technology sessions;
  • Providing readers’ advisory services and selecting library materials;
  • Contributing posts to the library blog and other library social media opportunities
  • Maintaining the library collections;
  • Assisting patrons in the operation of computers and computer software and providing appropriate instruction when needed;
  • Creating and providing publicity and programming, both in and outside the branch;
  • Participating in outreach activities to include physical outreach and participation in the library’s social media platforms, as well as writing posts for the blog.
  • Willingness to become a notary is desirable, because the branch has demand for notaries on the weekend.

Familiarity with the library system’s resources and social media platforms, including the website, prior to applying is strongly encouraged. Knowledge of current library technologies and the ability to use the library’s automated system, online resources, mobile applications, and Microsoft Office applications such as Word and Excel is a must.

This title is covered under AFSCME local 3566.  The current salary range for the position is $23.1590 to $37.4038 per hour. Once certified into a permanent title, part time employees earn sick and vacation time, and are eligible to receive holiday pay. Early Literacy Librarian (Full Time)- Scotch Plains Public Library May 1, 2024

Early Literacy Librarian

 

Job Description: 

Under the direction of the Head of Youth Services, the chosen candidate for this position is responsible for the planning, development, and implementation of the Library's early literacy programs, services, resources, and special events for children age birth to 5 years and their caregivers. The Early Literacy Librarian will also take a lead role in community outreach by developing partnerships with early learning centers, school networks, and other organizations that focus on early childhood development. The Librarian will also provide programs and resources to students, caregivers, and early childhood educators to expand the reach of the Library's early literacy services.

 

Qualifications: 

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited program (preferably with a concentration in Children and/or Youth Services)
  • Must have or be eligible to obtain a New Jersey Professional Librarian Certificate
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Development and/or education (highly preferred)
  • Experience in developing and conducting children’s programs, including instructional programs and services 
  • At least two years of experience working with children ages 5 and under (highly preferred)
  • Ability to to work effectively with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds
  • Storytelling skills, including singing and reading with expression

Essential Responsibilities: 

  • Plan and present high-quality in-person and virtual (when required) early literacy programs for children and families, educators and caregivers including storytimes, large-scale programs, and special events
  • Deliver high-quality services and resources to schools, including preschools and local schools
  • Develop and coordinate library's early learning opportunities and experiences that prepare children to become ready to learn to read
  • Schedule and provide community outreach
  • Develop Early Literacy Summer Reading program and other reading initiatives
  • Collect, maintain, and report program statistics
  • Prepare rotating library displays and book lists to highlight the library’s collection
  • Conduct tours and resource instructional guides to groups and individuals inside and outside the library
  •  Provide expert reference service to youth, caregivers, educators, and the general public
  • Assist in maintaining Early Literacy collection by ordering new materials, linking materials to the catalog, performing inventory, shelf-reading, shifting, and weeding ensuring the collection is current and relevant to the needs of the community
  • Maintain working knowledge of popular culture (for example: music, movies, authors and other interests)
  • Write and create publicity materials, including tri-folds, flyers, posters, electronic promotional materials and guides, press releases, and social media posts to keep both staff and the public informed
  • Participate in planning and presenting cross development programs and multi-age programming
  • Assist in other Youth Services department needs when necessary
  • Participate in local and consortium Youth Services organizations meetings and professional development training when necessary. 
  • Readily undertake other duties as assigned. 

 

Hours:

35 hours per week including at least one scheduled evening per week and Saturday on a rotating basis. Additional hours may be required for outreach and programming outside normal business hours.

Library Director - Tinton Falls Public Library May 1, 2024

The Tinton Falls Public Library, a Member Library of the Monmouth County Library (MCL) system, in Tinton Falls, NJ seeks a full-time Library Director to lead our staff and engage our growing community after a long-term closure.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Direct daily library operations and manage staff and volunteers.
  • Develop and coordinate innovative and engaging programs for adults and children.

Part-Time Library Associate – Marketing and Publicity April 30, 2024

Union Public Library seeks an energetic, creative, and self-motivated candidate for the part-time Marketing and Publicity Library Associate position. Under the direction of the Assistant Director, this role is responsible for marketing and publicity of Library services and programs, via a variety of channels, including print and social media. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with Department Heads to create and implement strategies, in order to increase the visibility of the Library throughout the Township and online. 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Plan, write, design, edit, and oversee the production and distribution of marketing material, including print brochures, mailers, emails, digital and print advertisements, print/digital signage, event calendars, annual reports, and other marketing materials that communicate, inform, and persuade;
  • Craft consistent and effective messages and marketing materials to represent and promote the Library. Help promote Library special events. Analyze and assess effectiveness of messages, materials, and distribution channels;
  • With Administration and staff, collaboratively develop and implement a marketing and communication plan to heighten awareness, understanding, and engagement with the Library’s services, collections, activities, and initiatives to residents;
  • Work with the Department Heads to coordinate and attend outreach events in the community.
  • Provide reference assistance at the Adult Services Desk.
  • Perform related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Ability to think strategically and creatively; handle multiple projects and priorities in a deadline sensitive environment;

Education and experience: The Marketing and Publicity Library Associate must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with course work in graphic design, marketing, communications, or related field, and a minimum of 2 years of prior experience in marketing and communications, ideally in a library or nonprofit organization. 

Schedule: 21 hours per week on-site, with the ability to work evenings and weekends.

Salary:  $20.38 per hour.  Paid sick time in accordance with the New Jersey Earned Sick Leave Law.

Full Time Circulation Supervisor April 30, 2024

Princeton Theological Seminary is seeking a full time Circulation Supervisor at Wright Library. The Seminary and Library are located in the heart of Princeton, New Jersey.

 

Position Description 

Title:   Circulation Supervisor 

Department:  Circulation Department, Library 

Status:  Exempt, full time, 35 hours per week, primarily evenings and weekends; schedule subject to change as needed based on office and program needs

Report to:  Head of Circulation Services

Purpose:  Perform a variety of essential Circulation operations, including management of the Circulation desk in the absence of the Head of Circulation Services; train and supervise student workers; manage interlibrary loan and take responsibility for specific projects

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

Perform Circulation operations following library policies and procedures   (50%) 

• Open and close the library, implementing procedures to ensure smooth, professional operation of Circulation Department services. • Perform circulation tasks, including checking items in and out, creating library accounts and requesting items for patrons. • Respond to and resolve patron questions and concerns in person, over the phone and via the departmental email account in a timely and courteous manner and enforce Library policies. • Perform advanced tasks within the integrated library system (ILS). • Communicate effectively with Circulation Department staff and student workers about departmental workflows and issues that require group collaboration. • Perform collection-related tasks such as shelving books, shelf reading, updating stack labels, and other tasks as needed. • Manage inventory projects, including identifying books that lack barcodes or item records; searching for and reporting missing and lost books; and entering updated collection item data into the ILS.   • Assist patrons with electronic resources, online catalog, and basic reference materials and methods; provide appropriate referrals to area and subject specialists. • Undertake technical tasks such as scanning, troubleshooting, and clearing jams from copiers, replacing paper and toner cartridges, and assisting patrons with copying and scanning.  • Maintain statistics as requested. • Maintain and order Circulation Department supplies. • Manage requests for library tours outside of regular office hours, such as nights and weekends. • Perform other duties as assigned. 

 

Supervision           (20%) 

• Train student workers in Library and Circulation policies and procedures. • Supervise the work of student workers, including the prioritization and delegation of daily and ongoing tasks. • Model excellent and professional service to student workers. 

 

Manage Interlibrary Loan (ILL)   (15%)

• Handle both borrowing and lending requests according to specific library policies. • Manage the gathering and scanning of requested materials. • Upload or mail requested materials as needed. • Communicate with other OCLC member libraries on ILL issues. 

Course Reserve Support     (15%)

 • Locate, retrieve, and organize physical and electronic collection materials for course reserves. • Ensure requested course materials meet copyright law requirements. • Help maintain an organized database of course reserve items.  • Keep faculty updated on course reserve status and assist students with access to course reserves. • Enforce course reserve borrowing rules and policies. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS • Must be willing and able to work evenings and weekends • Associate’s degree is required, or a high school diploma with previous library work experience • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work under the pressure of regular contact with the public  • Demonstrated ability to multitask, prioritize, and perform detailed work accurately  • Strong organizational skills • Ability to adapt to changing needs, including learning new systems and workflows, particularly when deadlines are at hand • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in the context of a small, collegial team in a changing environment  • Demonstrated flexibility, openness to innovation, as well as a commitment to continuous learning and a user-centered perspective • Proficiency in using basic computer applications, such as web browsers, Microsoft Office Suite

Princeton Theological Seminary is seeking a full time Head of Circulation Services at Wright Library. The Seminary and Library are located in the heart of Princeton, New Jersey.

 

Position Description Title:   Head of Circulation Services

Department:  Library 

Status:  Full time Exempt, M-F 8am-4pm, schedule subject to change based on office and program needs, including occasional evenings and weekends

Report to:  Assistant Director for Research and Public Services

Purpose:  Manage the Circulation Department, its staff and processes, and provide user-centered services and support at the Circulation desk  

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

Management of Circulation Department Operations     (50%) 

• Manage all borrowing, lending, and reserves at the Circulation desk, as well as stack maintenance. • Locate, organize, and make available materials requested by faculty for course reserves, in physical and electronic formats, with assistance from the Circulation staff and student workers. Encourage appropriate use of course reserve materials under copyright law. • Streamline and automate Circulation desk procedures, update workflows, and keep current with best practices and professional development. Maintain up-to-date documentation and operations manuals, including for Circulation tasks, policies, interlibrary loans, and course reserves. • Perform Circulation tasks as needed, including checking items in and out, requesting items for patrons, and creating library accounts. • Supervise the interlibrary loan (ILL) lending service and delegate duties/responsibilities to staff accordingly. • Respond to and resolve patron concerns in a timely and courteous manner and enforce library policies. • Maintain and communicate Circulation statistics for regular reports and assist with library assessment. • Create signage throughout the library as needed.

 

Supervision          (25%)

 • Hire and train Circulation staff and student workers.  • Manage Circulation staff and student workers, creating work schedules to maximize desk coverage for Wright Library’s operating hours and manage operational efficiencies in the department. • Provide ongoing training in new systems and operations and provide timely performance feedback.

 

Collaboration           (25%)

 • Work with the Assistant Director for Research and Public Services and the Reference and Research Librarian to reshape and recommend access, research, and outreach policies, procedures, and services that focus on the user and improved user experience of the library. • Work with the Systems and Data Management Librarian to maintain seamless performance and implementation of the Circulation module of the current integrated library system. • Work with the Discovery and Web Services Librarian to resolve and improve access and library account issues. • Develop collaborative relationships with regional libraries with which Wright Library shares patrons. • Coordinate with PTS Public Safety to create a safe and welcoming library experience, and communicate with Custodial, Facilities, and IT staff to address building and technology issues. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 • College degree and a minimum of three years of library experience; library degree preferred • Experience with both an integrated library system and a learning management system preferred • Demonstrated ability to multitask, prioritize, and perform detailed work accurately  • Proficiency in using office technology applications, including Microsoft Office Suite  • Excellent organizational and communication skills • Supervisory experience, preferably with both staff and student workers • A commitment to a user-centered perspective • A spirit of hospitality and the ability to work under the pressure of regular public contact with a diverse patron community • Demonstrated flexibility, openness to change and innovation, and a tolerance for ambiguity
