JOB OPENING: Full-Time Adult Services Librarian

 

The Plainsboro Public Library seeks a full-time Adult Services Librarian.  The Adult Services Librarian position presents an exciting opportunity for an engaged, self-motivated candidate to join the Plainsboro Library Public Services team. The Adult Services Librarian is responsible for planning, organizing, and implementing adult programming activities and events for the library as well as scheduling local organizations’ use of the community room.  The Adult Services Librarian also provides professional reference customer service at the reference desk and other service desks as needed.  The Adult Services Librarian represents the library at both township and other local organization events to create community connections and promote library services.  The Adult Services Librarian maintains records and assists the Assistant Director of Public Services with completing any necessary reports.   

 

The position requires outstanding organizational skills and the ability to be detail oriented and candidates should possess excellent written and oral communication skills.   Bilingual abilities including Chinese, Hindi, Tamil, and Spanish are a plus, but not required. 

 

Responsibilities May Include But Are Not Limited to: 

  • Develop, organize, and execute programs for adults and seniors including special events and performers; 
  • Develop publicity materials that highlight programs and events; 
  • Work closely with other library staff to develop activities that can be executed library wide; 
  • Foster partnerships with Township departments and community groups to encourage diverse programming at the library; 
  • Recommend target community groups to partner with for library events and programs; 
  • Represent the library at both township and other local organization events; 
  • Participate in the planning and implementation of the library summer reading program;   
  • Prepare statistical and narrative reports and evaluations for the Assistant Director of Public Services;   
  • Assist in developing department goals to evaluate and improve/expand library services to the community;   
  • Provide reference service in person, by telephone and electronically to all ages; 
  • Assist customers in the use of department resources, print and electronic; 
  • Provides customers with assistance at the public computers and equipment; 
  • Provide information about and registration for programs; 
  • Provides high quality reader’s advisory to assist customers in selecting materials appropriate for their age group, interest, and reading capabilities; 
  • Oversees and directs the work of library volunteers;   
  • Provides youth information desk assistance as needed; 
  •  Participate in the selection of materials for the library’s digital collections; 
  • Develop and maintain the library’s database and digital resources collection; 
  • Prepare statistical reports and evaluations on database and digital resource use;     
  • Participate in the weeding and maintenance and display of adult collections; and 
  • Maintain and monitor collection development budget for assigned areas. 
  • Performing other tasks as required. 
  • Locate and select exhibiting artists and create gallery schedule for monthly shows; 
  • Oversee hanging and dismantling of shows; 
  • Schedule and attend monthly art receptions; 
  • Develop publicity materials that highlight gallery shows and receptions including but not limited to flyers, social media posts, and press releases; 
  • Facilitate monthly adult artists’ group; and 
  • Performing other tasks as required. 

 

Professional development duties: 

  • Attending conferences, meetings, workshops, seminars and courses related to duties as well as in-house staff trainings to keep technological skills up to date and maintain professional best practices;

  • Read current adult fiction and nonfiction materials in order to be able to provide reader's advisory services;

  • Participate in ongoing and annual performance evaluations with the Assistant Director of Public Services. 

 

Knowledge, skills and abilities: 

Knowledge of: 

  • the principles, practices and techniques of modern library operation; 
  • current trends in the delivery of library services to adults and seniors; 
  • adult and senior literature and resources; 
  • library software, apps and common computer software such as MS Office; and   
  • library research techniques. 

Ability to: 

  • to maintain accurate records and statistics and complete reports; 
  • plan and execute adult and senior programs; 
  • to cultivate a warm and welcoming environment for all patrons. 
  • to exercise initiative and independent judgment; 
  • to complete tasks either independently or collaboratively and within a specified timeframe; 
  • to establish and maintain effective working relationships with department supervisor, library staff, and patrons; and 
  • to communicate ideas effectively both orally and in writing. 

 

Education and experience:  The Community Relations Librarian must have a Master’s in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited library school as well as some experience in coordinating programs and events and working in a public library. The Community Relations Librarian must possess certification as a Professional Librarian issued by the State of New Jersey. 

 

Conditions of Work: The Community Relations Librarian must have the ability with or without reasonable accommodation, to lift up to 20 lbs. of materials, perform light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. The work requires stooping, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; and visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data.   The work may require standing or otherwise through reasonable accommodation, for extended periods of time, as well as the ability to meet and greet customers and Township officials and observe general surroundings.  The worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions. 

 

Salary:  $54,953 for MLS Librarian; Generous benefits package.

Digital Literacy Coordinator (PT) - South Brunswick Public Library April 29, 2024

The South Brunswick Library, located halfway between the metropolitan hubs of NYC and Philadelphia, is home to a diverse, growing community that values all the services the Library provides. Our staff is dedicated to providing excellent customer service through innovative programming, community engagement and outreach, and our Mobile Branch.

Our Library is embarking on an $11 million construction project to expand and repurpose our existing building. We are excited to bring new team members aboard as we build our next chapter at the South Brunswick Public Library. Renovations will include a new auditorium, state-of-the art meeting room, an expanded Teen Room, group study rooms, an instruction lab and more.

The South Brunswick Public Library is seeking a part-time Digital Literacy Instructor with excellent technology, training, and customer service skills. The position will help coordinate services and assist patrons with digital skills in accordance with the Community Library Adult Literacy and Career Pathway program (CLALCP), which aims to expand adult literacy services in the Garden State.

Advanced computer skills are required and experience working with multilingual populations is strongly preferred.

This is a 12 hours/week position with some evening and possibly weekend hours required. The position is expected to run through July of 2025, with the possibility of continuation, contingent on funding.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Provide technology instruction one-on-one, in small groups, and in a classroom setting.
  • Supervise use of dedicated computers and hardware.
  • Set up and track client goals, providing support as needed.
  • Provide ongoing technical and subject area support and assessment
  • Maintain a schedule of technology-related appointments, classes, and programs.
  • Communicate effectively with library staff and other libraries about programs and services aligned with the program’s goals.
  • Assist patrons with career-related services for employment, including job searching.
  • Maintain reporting on grant-related digital literacy initiatives.
  • Input events on the Library’s online calendar.
  • Represent the Library at community events.

Requirements:

  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Experience with instruction/training.
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills and ability to provide technical support.
  • High-level proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and other common workplace programs.
  • Ability to creatively deliver training materials in an in-person and online setting.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and provide technical support.
  • Ability to comply with record-keeping protocols.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a background check.

Compensation: The 2024 rate for this position is $28/hr.

PT Library Assistants (Circulation and Youth Services) April 24, 2024

The Margaret E. Heggan Free Public Library of Washington Township in Sewell, NJ seeks candidates for the positions of PT Library Assistant in the Circulation Department and PT Children’s Library Assistant in the Youth Services Department.  The schedule includes afternoons, evenings, and regularly scheduled weekends.  Evening and weekend hours are mandatory and are not negotiable.  The library is open seven days per week throughout the year.  The selected candidate, if not a New Jersey resident, will be required to establish New Jersey residency within a year of appointment in accordance with the New Jersey First Act.  Pay is $16.39 per hour.  All part-time library staff are eligible for accrued sick time based on the requirements of the New Jersey Paid Sick Leave Law.   The selected candidate must enroll in the DCRP pension system, which is a mandatory payroll deduction of 5.5% of base salary.

Requirements for PT Library Assistant in Youth Services Department

  • High school diploma

  • Excellent computer skills with the ability to learn new software quickly
  • At least one year working in a paid public service position assisting children and their caregivers

Preferred for both positions

  • Flexibility with schedule and ability to work additional hours during staff absences 
  • Prior experience working in a library and using the Dewey Decimal Classification System or prior experience working with the public
  • Knowledge of and interest in reading materials and other items that may be borrowed at a public library

Part Time Adult Services Librarian April 23, 2024

The Monroe Township Public Library (Middlesex County) seeks an enthusiastic candidate with strong customer service skills and hands-on experience with technology and library programming to join the Reference Department. 

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Assist patrons in discovering and locating library materials and resources in a variety of formats
  • Provide accurate reference and reader advisory service to the public via phone, in-person, and online inquiries
  • Provide technology assistance to patrons in the use of the online catalog, databases, Internet, digital resources, public computers, personal devices, one-on-one appointments, and other instruction 
  • Develop and implement stand-alone and/or on-going library programs for adults. Create printable flyers to advertise programs. 
  • Provide collection development and weeding of materials in designated areas
  • Knowledge of the integrated library system, including requesting materials from cooperating libraries

PT children services librarian/library intern April 23, 2024

The Gloucester City Library is seeking a motivated and customer service minded part-time children service librarian to work about 16-20 hours/week. The main responsibilities include but are not limited to preparing and delivering age-appropriate story time, crafts time and other children’s programs, serving patrons of all ages at the front desk, conducting library tours and reaching out to the local schools and communities. 

Qualifications/Requirements: MLIS/MLS degree from an accredited college or library students in  children services track who have completed most degree credits; availability for evening shifts and weekend shifts; strong customer service skills and interpersonal skills; effectively promotes library services in a positive and professional manner when interacting with the public.

DUTIES

Engaging with library patrons while staffing service desk.

Checking in/out, renewing, or any other method for the proper circulation of library materials.

Issuing library cards according to established procedures.

Inspecting returned items for damage and assessing and receiving any fees or fines.

Answering inquiries of a non-professional nature on the telephone or in person, or referring to appropriate staff as needed.

Sorting materials according to the classification and returning them to designated home locations.  

Other duties include: emptying book drop; checking in daily newspapers; reshelving materials; and reading and straightening shelves.

EDUCATION
High School diploma or general education degree (GED). Associates degree or higher preferred. Previous library experience is strongly recommended. Public service and computer experience or closely related skills. Accurate typing/keyboarding is a required skill. Ability to learn and effectively use various computer and electronic systems is essential.
