The Margaret E. Heggan Free Public Library of Washington Township in Sewell, NJ seeks candidates for the positions of PT Library Assistant in the Circulation Department and PT Children’s Library Assistant in the Youth Services Department.  The schedule includes afternoons, evenings, and regularly scheduled weekends.  Evening and weekend hours are mandatory and are not negotiable.  The library is open seven days per week throughout the year.  The selected candidate, if not a New Jersey resident, will be required to establish New Jersey residency within a year of appointment in accordance with the New Jersey First Act.  Pay is $16.39 per hour.  All part-time library staff are eligible for accrued sick time based on the requirements of the New Jersey Paid Sick Leave Law.   The selected candidate must enroll in the DCRP pension system, which is a mandatory payroll deduction of 5.5% of base salary. 

Responsibilities of PT Library Assistant in Circulation Department

  • Providing excellent customer service at all times
  • Charging and discharging library materials while following policy and procedural guidelines
  • Issuing new library cards and renewing existing accounts
  • Searching for library materials and processing hold requests
  • Answering telephones and assisting callers as needed
  • Billing and accepting payment for library overdue fees and material charges
  • Shelving books, straightening shelves, and reading shelves
  • Processing computer guest passes and registering patrons for library programs via online software
  • Operating a cash register, photocopy machine, and a facsimile machine
  • Tactfully and politely ensuring that library patrons are adhering to Library Rules of Conduct as needed
  • Assisting with coverage at the children’s desk
  • Performing other duties as assigned at direction of supervisor

Requirements for PT Library Assistant in Circulation Department

  • High school diploma
  • Ability to communicate well and follow directions while being detail-oriented
  • Excellent computer skills with the ability to learn new software quickly
  • At least one year working in a clerical position

Responsibilities of PT Library Assistant in Youth Services Department

  • Providing excellent customer service at all times

  • Shelving books, straightening shelves, and reading shelves
  • Tactfully and politely ensuring that library patrons are adhering to Library Rules of Conduct as needed
  • Preparing thematic and seasonal displays of books and other library materials
  • Organizing supplies for library programs
  • Assisting children and caregivers with selecting library materials
  • Assisting with coverage at the circulation desk
  • Performing other duties as assigned at direction of supervisor

Requirements for PT Library Assistant in Youth Services Department

  • High school diploma
  • Ability to communicate well and follow directions while being detail-oriented
  • Excellent computer skills with the ability to learn new software quickly
  • At least one year working in a paid public service position assisting children and their caregivers

Preferred for both positions

  • Flexibility with schedule and ability to work additional hours during staff absences 
  • Prior experience working in a library and using the Dewey Decimal Classification System or prior experience working with the public
  • Knowledge of and interest in reading materials and other items that may be borrowed at a public library

Part Time Adult Services Librarian April 23, 2024

The Monroe Township Public Library (Middlesex County) seeks an enthusiastic candidate with strong customer service skills and hands-on experience with technology and library programming to join the Reference Department. 

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Assist patrons in discovering and locating library materials and resources in a variety of formats
  • Provide accurate reference and reader advisory service to the public via phone, in-person, and online inquiries
  • Provide technology assistance to patrons in the use of the online catalog, databases, Internet, digital resources, public computers, personal devices, one-on-one appointments, and other instruction 
  • Develop and implement stand-alone and/or on-going library programs for adults. Create printable flyers to advertise programs. 
  • Provide collection development and weeding of materials in designated areas
  • Knowledge of the integrated library system, including requesting materials from cooperating libraries
  • Monitor activities in the Reference area
  • Perform other related duties as assigned. The examples of work for this title are for illustrative purposes only. A particular position in this title may not perform all duties listed in this job specification. Conversely, all duties performed on the job may not be listed.

Education and Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Library and Information Science (or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited program (MLIS students may be considered)
  • New Jersey State Professional Librarian Certificate
  • At least 2 years of experience working in a public library preferred
  • Experience using Microsoft Teams, Office 365, and Canva or similar software preferred
  • Demonstration of a positive attitude towards working independently and as part of a team
  • Handling of patron concerns and complaints with an emphasis on good customer service 

Hours: Up to 19.5 hours per week

  • Regularly scheduled hours: one evening per week until 9:00 PM, Friday 1:00-5:00 PM
  • One to two Saturdays required per month 9:30 AM-5:00 PM, in addition to regularly scheduled hours, selected based on seniority

Starting salary: $34.28 per hour (MLIS students may be considered at a prorated hourly rate)

PT children services librarian/library intern April 23, 2024

The Gloucester City Library is seeking a motivated and customer service minded part-time children service librarian to work about 16-20 hours/week. The main responsibilities include but are not limited to preparing and delivering age-appropriate story time, crafts time and other children’s programs, serving patrons of all ages at the front desk, conducting library tours and reaching out to the local schools and communities. 

Qualifications/Requirements: MLIS/MLS degree from an accredited college or library students in  children services track who have completed most degree credits; availability for evening shifts and weekend shifts; strong customer service skills and interpersonal skills; effectively promotes library services in a positive and professional manner when interacting with the public.

DUTIES

Engaging with library patrons while staffing service desk.

Checking in/out, renewing, or any other method for the proper circulation of library materials.

Issuing library cards according to established procedures.

Inspecting returned items for damage and assessing and receiving any fees or fines.

Answering inquiries of a non-professional nature on the telephone or in person, or referring to appropriate staff as needed.

Sorting materials according to the classification and returning them to designated home locations.  

Other duties include: emptying book drop; checking in daily newspapers; reshelving materials; and reading and straightening shelves.

EDUCATION
High School diploma or general education degree (GED). Associates degree or higher preferred. Previous library experience is strongly recommended. Public service and computer experience or closely related skills. Accurate typing/keyboarding is a required skill. Ability to learn and effectively use various computer and electronic systems is essential.  

QUALIFICATIONS FOR CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT

The Westfield Memorial Library is seeking an energetic, creative, and team-oriented Development Associate to join the library in a part-time capacity. The successful applicant will have the demonstrated ability to solicit funding for a non-profit organization through annual fundraising campaigns and competitive grant opportunities.

The Development Associate will work closely with the Library Director, the Library Board’s Long-Range Planning Committee, and the Foundation Board.

Responsibilities May Include

Fundraising

Develop annual library fundraising campaigns.
Organize donor events.
Solicit current donors for increased contributions.
Network with potential donors.
Deliver reports on fundraising activities and progress.

Grants

Research, prepare, and submit proposals for relevant funding opportunities.
Follow all requirements and deadlines for grant applications.
Maintain a grants calendar to monitor progress.
Communicate with potential donors and institutional donors.
Write sponsorship packages.
Identify new funding opportunities.
Review potential grant opportunities with the Library Director and relevant Department Heads.

Requirements

The successful applicant will have the demonstrated ability to turn social media content ideas into engaging videos, images, and text captions. The Social Media Content Creator will create and maintain a content calendar. A deep interest in current social media trends is required to be successful in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Creating various forms of social media content, including text captions, videos, and images, that are suitable for various social media platforms (Instagram, Threads, TikTok, YouTube, X, etc.)
  • Establishing a social media content calendar, and publishing content accordingly.
  • Ensuring that every piece of published social media content aligns with the library’s mission and brand voice, and helps the library maximize engagement, and build community.

Requirements

  • Deep knowledge of social media trends and engagement strategy.
  • Ability to work with creative tools like Canva, Adobe, etc.
  • Proven experience in creating engaging content on relevant social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram/Threads, LinkedIn, YouTube, and X/Twitter.
