JOB DESCRIPTION

Coordinate staff and programs at the Bellevue Avenue Branch of the Montclair Public Library with the goals of running the branch efficiently, satisfying library patrons, sharing information with staff and the public, and promoting the library under the supervision of the Assistant Director. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

Plan, implement, and administer all elements of services for customers of all ages at the Bellevue Avenue Branch under the direction of the Assistant Library Director.  The position requires an understanding of the needs and interests of all age groups, community groups, parents, caregivers and all adults who work with children, and the knowledge and leadership to deliver appropriate services. This position will provide direct services to children and teens and will serve as the Youth Services Librarian in the building. 

The examples of duties and responsibilities below are intended to describe the general nature and level of work to be performed by the individuals in this position, rather than an exhaustive list.

Management and supervision

  • Supervise functions performed by staff. 
  • Understand and effectively communicate MPL policy and procedures to staff.
  • Schedule staff to ensure that desks, programs and outreach efforts are adequately covered.
  • Reconcile and approve timesheets. 
  • Evaluate and motivate staff.  

 

Administration 

  • Generate applicable reports daily, monthly and as requested by Director/Assistant Director.
  • Work in concert with Heads of Youth & Teen Services and Adult Services to develop programs. 
  • Manage programs and material selections within the budget.
  • In concert with the Library Director/Assistant Director, establish policies, strategies and plans for the Branch using the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Prepare clear, accurate and informative narrative and statistical departmental reports monthly and annually.
  • Oversee cash register transactions, daily register sheets and ensure cash has been properly handled. 
  • Ensure funds are expended according to library procedure

 

Customer service

  • Interact in a positive way with individuals.
  • Handle problems and conflicts calmly, ably, and effectively.
  • Utilize good judgment in mediating issues involving policy and procedure concerns.

 

Collection development and Resources

  • Select books and other materials for preschoolers through high school, using knowledge of children, parents, children’s literature, popular reading trends, websites and electronic media that support a relevant children’s collection.
  • Utilize BCCLS and Library resources, including the catalog, eResources, eBooks, downloadable materials, and web subject guides.
  • Promote literacy and provide materials that reflect the diverse interests of the community.  
  • Keep the collection up to date and attractive by weeding using the CREW method. 

 

Reference & Reader Advisory Service

  • Responsible for reader’s advisory and reference services using the full range of resources available including Internet, databases, indexes, periodicals, directories, reference, and circulating books.
  • Develop curriculum connections across the range of grades.  Develop a close and positive working relationship with local schools and the PTA through visits, book talks and programs for classes through school and library visits.  

 

Programming

Plan and conduct programming, both directly and by supervising subordinate staff members.  Provide:

  • Ongoing programs like story times, reading clubs, crafts etc. offered at a variety of times.
  • Special programs of educational and entertainment value, e.g., Summer Reading Program.
  • Negotiate with and book performers of a wide variety including lectures, musicians, etc..
  • Outreach and specialized programming to serve the diverse interests and needs of the community.

 

Communication skills

  • Interact in a positive way with groups and individuals, both children and adults.  
  • Public relations:  develop and promote programs and services via press releases, flyers, websites, social media, and other public relations channels.

 

Professional development

  • Continue to develop skills by attending seminars and meetings of professional library groups and organizations.   
  • Encourage staff to participate in BCCLS, Essex County and NJLA meetings, as well as participating directly.

 

Facilities Management

  • Ensure library building and grounds are safe and free from hazards.
  • Report issues to and work in concert with the Facilities and Security staff to ensure proper maintenance and cleanliness of building.
  • Report issues to and work in concert with the Technology Specialist to ensure public computers are functioning properly and determine technology needs for the public and staff.

 

Other duties, as assigned.

  • Knowledge of the theories, objectives, principles and techniques of librarianship and child development. 
  • Working knowledge of, or ability to learn, Polaris and LEAP, and other tools needed to meet job objectives. 
  • Welcoming behaviors including friendliness, cooperation, creativity, patience and enthusiasm. 
  • Work harmoniously with co-workers and a diverse and varied clientele.
  • Ability to supervise, motivate and evaluate staff.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate and direct work and to exercise initiative and good judgement.

  • Ability to exercise initiative and to stimulate interest and encourage participation in reading and other library activities.
  • Ability to advocate for youth in Montclair.
  • Excellent customer service and ability to calmly resolve conflicts
  • Time management: set priorities in order to meet assignment deadlines.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • MLS from an ALA Accredited School with NJ Professional Librarian Certificate.
  • Minimum of five years of librarianship.
  • Current knowledge of library trends and innovations.
  • Residency in the State of New Jersey required in accordance with New Jersey Revised Statutes § 52:14-7
  • Salary $71,740
