PALS Plus, a consortium of 22 public and academic libraries in Passaic, Essex, and Hudson Counties, is seeking candidates for a full-time Catalog and Metadata Services Librarian position to oversee the cataloging practices and workflows of the consortium.

 

Summary

The PALS Plus Catalog and Metadata staffer will join a team of 3 full-time and 2 part-time employees in administering the consortium's services.  This individual will report to the Executive Director and will work closely with the System Administrator and various committees. The PALS Plus Catalog and Metadata Services Librarian provides expertise and direct support to PALS Plus and member library staff in developing, implementing, and overseeing metadata procedures and processes to ensure the integrity of the database.  This individual will also develop and support the shared online catalog and local library profiles, and assists in the administration of the ILS.

The position is scheduled at 35 hours per week, Monday – Friday, and the work will be chiefly performed at the PALS Plus office located at 292 Piaget Ave in Clifton, NJ, but occasional visits to member libraries for training and meetings may be required.  As such, a valid driver’s license and access to transportation to meetings and duties outside of the PALS Plus office is required.

PALS Plus is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and is not subject to New Jersey First state residency requirements.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plans, develops, implements, and reinforces system metadata and cataloging policies, standards, procedures, and workflows for various formats.
  • Performs original and copy cataloging of a variety of formats and languages in compliance with AACR2, MARC, LCSH, and RDA standards and local cataloging policies.
  • Coordinates the creation, acquisition, updating, and removal of metadata records.
  • Serves as chief liaison to vendors and providers of bibliographic records.
  • Serves as the PALS Plus liaison to the PALS Plus Technical Services Committee
  • Provides leadership, training, and support for cataloging staff at member libraries.
  • Evaluates the accuracy of metadata for effective discovery and administrative functions.
  • Maintains the integrity of the catalog by addressing database errors.
  • Develops and maintains the discovery platform for the consortium collection and local library profiles.
  • Keeps abreast of trends in the metadata and discovery landscape.
  • Creates and generates reports as needed by library staff and PALS Plus administration
  • Supports ILS administration, as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Executive Director

 

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS, MLIS, MI)
  • Three years of experience in library cataloging.
  • Knowledge of cataloging standards.
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience in multi-faceted training (in-person, group, webinars, etc.)
  • Experience with HTML, CSS,  and other website programming languages
  • Excellent writing, organizational, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Familiarity with Spanish and other foreign languages for cataloging purposes.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Commitment to providing stellar customer service.
  • Familiarity with the SirsiDynix WorkFlows integrated library system is preferred.
