MAIN is seeking a technology-oriented librarian to become the organization’s very first Digital Initiatives & Platforms Librarian. The chosen candidate will collaborate with industry experts and be regularly interacting with administration of a discovery layer, mobile app, integrated library system, eContent platforms, and other types of web-facing services. Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Works collaboratively with other MAIN staff members to deliver cutting edge digital initiatives and platforms to member libraries.
  • Actively keeps abreast of emerging digital trends, products, and technologies, and how they may be implemented.
  • Attends webinars and conferences to learn how other libraries are managing their digital platforms.
  • Assists in selecting and purchasing eBooks and eAudiobooks for the MAIN central collections.
  • Ensures cataloging standards are reinforced in digital platforms’ policies/settings.
  • Provides technical support for the ILS and digital platforms to MAIN’s membership.
  • Assists with the operation of the ILS and all of its components, including the public access catalog (PAC) and reporting modules.
  • Assures timely testing and implementation of new modules and software upgrades.
  • Creates regular and custom reports as requested by member libraries.
  • Serves as a contact with the ILS vendor for software and client application issues.
  • Assists with the creation and maintenance of bibliographic records in accordance with RDA, MARC, LCSH, and AACR2 standards and local cataloging policies
  • Maintains a presence within the national and regional Innovative Users Group (IUG) communities.
  • Assists with routine website maintenance
  • Assists with the coordination of training member libraries’ staff members.
  • Helps manage data migrations stemming from incoming MAIN members.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS, MLIS, MI)
  • Experience in working as a library’s eResources evaluator preferred
  • Experience working as a cataloger or digital/systems librarian preferred
  • Experience in technical training novices and experienced colleagues alike preferred

 

Required Specialized Skills & Traits:

  • Proven track record of delivering excellent customer service
  • Expert in using Microsoft Office software including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • History of taking initiative and perpetually integrating new technologies
  • Ability to work independently, in a team environment, and from home
  • Ability to interact with people with varying levels of knowledge or comfort with technology
  • Ability to present ideas effectively, both orally and in in writing
  • Eager to interact with customers face-to-face, on telephone, via email/Zoom, and unafraid to address groups of under 50 people
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

 

Preferred Specialized Skills:

  • Familiarity with and willingness to learn the operations of an ILS and digital platforms
  • Basic understanding and ability to become an expert in SQL
  • Basic understand and willingness to learn cataloging principles, such as RDA, MARC & LCSH standards
  • Proficiency in HTML and CSS, working knowledge of PHP and JavaScript

 

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

The position is scheduled for a 35-hour work week and requires the ability to work on a flexible schedule, with occasional evening and weekend hours. MAIN is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and is not subject to the “New Jersey First” state residency requirements.

Work is performed primarily at the MAIN consortium office located at 16 Wing Drive in Cedar Knolls, although occasional visits to member libraries will be required. This position requires the ability to have transportation to make library site visits and attend meetings outside the office.

Work is performed primarily in a busy office environment while sitting at a desk or computer station, or while standing for extended periods of time. Physical exertion may be required to lift office supplies and library materials up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The need to respond to competing needs or meet deadlines could cause stress at times. Equipment used includes computers and various office machines.

 

Compensation

  • Salary commensurate with experience, but not less than $57,000/year
