Summary: The Parsippany-Troy Hills Public Library System is looking for a Full Time Head of Youth Services (Librarian 3) to join the dedicated team of professionals in the Children’s Department of the Lake Hiawatha Branch.  Responsibilities of the position include managing the department, providing customer service, collection development, reference and online reader’s advisory, development and implementation of creative and innovative children’s programming, and community and local school outreach. 

About the Library: The Parsippany-Troy Hills Public Library System serves a population of 56,000 with a Main Library and two branches. Located in Morris County, NJ, Parsippany is a vibrant and diverse community which has often been recognized as one of the best places to live in the U.S.

Qualifications: ALA-Accredited master's Degree in Library Science, a NJ Librarian Certificate issued by Thomas Edison State University (or eligibility to acquire certificate within 6 months of hire date).

Other Important Information: New Jersey residency is required within one year of date of hire. Successful completion of a criminal background check is also required. Initial appointment

Position Title – Librarian 3, Head of Youth Services

Location – Lake Hiawatha Branch, 68 Nokomis Ave, Lake Hiawatha, NJ 07034

Department – Youth Services

Supervisor – Korin Rosenkrans, Branch Manager

Salary – $65,000

 

Public Service

  • Provides reference and reader’s advisory service to library customers.
  • Greets patrons who enter the library and offers help.
  • Keeps up to date with current youth service trends.
  • Ensures that the building is opened on time and closed in a safe, and secure manner.
  • Conducts and supervises community outreach.
  • Enforce Library rules of conduct and policies with patrons.

 

Collection Development

  • Coordinates collection development of Children’s collection.
  • Examines all parts of the collection; adds or weeds items as necessary.
  • Weeds collection as agreed upon and within the guidelines established in the library’s collection development policy.
  • Remains within budget for items purchased each year.
  • Purchases titles requested by customers.
  • Keeps appropriate statistics to assist with determining collection development needs.

 

Staff and Professional Responsibility

  • Develop, implement, evaluate, and promote Children’s services and programs.
  • Provides leadership and direction to the youth services department.
  • Schedule staff to ensure that desk, programs, and programs are covered.
  • Approves time off requests and employee timecards in a timely manner, consistent with the payroll schedule.
  • Participate in Leadership Meetings.
  • Prepares all department reports on a monthly/yearly basis.
  • Gives input into determining department goals and objectives.
  • In the absence of the branch manager, handles building concerns.
  • Assist with searching for and creating grant proposals.

Job Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in Library or Information Sciences.
  • Valid Certification as a Professional Librarian issued by Thomas Edison State University.
  • 2 Years of public librarian experience, some supervisory experience preferred.

Position Requirements:

  • New Jersey residency requirement: “New Jersey First Act”, N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L. 2011, Chapter 70).
  • Availability to work a minimum of one evening per week, and up to two weekend days per month.
  • Ability to perform the job with or without reasonable accommodation. Able to sit, stand, bend, kneel, climb, push, and pull. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
