Full Time Principal Library Assistant, Ewing Branch, Mercer County Library System.

This position is 35 hours per week, serves as the Sunday anchor during the school year, and includes one evening per week.

The Principal Library Assistant will report directly to the branch manager.   Under the supervision of the branch manager, s/he will be responsible for leading the circulation desk team by example, through excellent knowledge of customer service, library policy and procedure, and technology skills.  Knowledge of Symphony Workflows is a plus, and the candidate should be familiar with Microsoft Office programs such as Word and Excel.  As the circulation team’s leader, the Principal Library Assistant must be resourceful and innovative, looking for the best way to improve the flow of work and manage the department’s staff.  The successful candidate should possess strong communication skills, be enthusiastic, work well with others in a supervisory role, be detail-oriented, and able to complete a variety of tasks in an organized and timely manner. S/he should also exhibit a strong sense of friendly professionalism, be self-motivated, and efficient.

Duties consist of, but are not limited to:

  • assisting the branch manager with payroll and scheduling;
  • training and supervision of all circulation staff;
  • ensuring that all circulation staff comply with Mercer County Library policy and procedures;
  • delegating specific work assignments to circulation staff to ensure effective and efficient running of the department;
  • generating daily reports;
  • compiling daily branch statistics;
  • collecting library fines/fees and ensuring that monies are secured during hours of operation;
  • general circulation desk duties;
  • assisting the branch manager with setting the flow of work for collection management projects;
  • conveying important information to library administration in the absence of the branch manager;
  • performing titles and subject searches;
  • placing items on reserve for patrons;
  • oversight of office supplies;
  • processing materials for the collection;
  • assisting patrons using the copier and other library machinery;
  • emptying the book and DVD drops, shelving/shelf reading, and other projects and assignments as needed.

The civil service job description for this title may be found on the New Jersey Civil Service Commission website. This position is affiliated with AFSCME Local 2287, and there is a 90-day probationary period.  The current salary range for this title is presently $39,908 to $53,540.
