Responsible for reader’s advisory and children's and teen reference services using the full range of resources available. Excellent customer service is essential to this position.

PARTIAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

  • Assist children, parents, and adults who work with children in selecting library materials through reader’s advisory and programs where appropriate.

  • Promote literacy and provide materials that reflect the diverse interests of the community.

  • Assist children and teens in using public computers and electronic resources.

  • Prepare age appropriate reading lists.

  • Maintain the appearance of the children’s room or young adult area, including the condition of the shelves, displays and general atmosphere.

  • Promote programs and services through flyers, press releases, social media and website updates.

  • Create and implement programs for children and/or teens.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Maintain good housekeeping practices and perform in a safe and effective manner so as not to inflict injury to self or others. Inform proper authority of any hazardous situations in the work environment.

  • Clearly communicate and enforce the policies and procedures adopted by the Montclair Public Library.

  • Support the library’s mission, vision and values, as well as a commitment to the community served by the library.

  • Desire to work in an environment that is inclusive and respectful.

  • Excellent customer service skills.

  • Commitment to the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of current events, popular and local culture.

  • Knowledge of the theories, objectives, principles and techniques of librarianship.

  • High level of online skills such as internet searches, social media, desktop applications, websites.

  • Ability to learn of BCCLS ILS (Polaris and Leap).

  • Ability to utilize the full resources of BCCLS, including the web catalog, digital resources, eBooks, and downloadable materials.

  • Ability to utilize the full resources of the New Jersey State Library, e.g., Jersey Clicks, resources for the hearing and sight impaired, historical information.

  • Ability to work harmoniously with co-workers and a diverse and varied clientele.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Librarian: MLIS with NJ Certification; Library Assistant: Bachelors degree.

  • Minimum of one year of library or customer service experience.

  • Current knowledge of library trends and innovations.

  • Residency in the State of New Jersey will be required in accordance with New Jersey Revised Statutes §52:14-7.

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE
Tuesday: 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Wednesday: 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Saturday: 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. on a rotating basis
Sunday: 1-6 p.m. on a rotating basis

SALARY
Librarian: Accredited MLIS degree, $31.84
Library Assistant: Some undergraduate work, $17.37

Note: A Librarian position will have more responsibilities in the areas of readers advisory, programming, and outreach.
