The Dowdell Library of South Amboy seeks an energetic and self-motivated individual who is detail oriented, tech-savvy, and provides friendly customer service. Experience managing archives is preferred.

Basic Responsibilities

Manages archives: performs routine procedures to insure material preservation and proper handling of historical materials; classifies materials for filing; processes archival materials according to relevant standards; conducts inventory, assists in the acquisition of archival materials; conducts infrequent book repair; re-houses material into archival containers and files on a regular basis; accurately prepares reports; updates records and conducts special projects in a timely and well-organized manner. Preparation of archival materials for digitization would be done on an annual basis. Work is closely reviewed for adequacy and accuracy with the Supervisor; training will be provided.

  • Responds to patron’s historical/genealogical inquiries in a professional way
  • Cultivates community relationships to promote the archives
  • Possess strong communication skills and acts as a library advocate
  • Assists in operations when scheduled on the public service desk
  • Can comprehend, analyze and interpret policies and procedures
  • Provides readers advisory to library patrons  
  • Assists with major library programs
  • Occasionally provides guidance and supervises volunteers
  • Training will be provided to perform notary duties
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality are essential
  • Other duties as needed

Qualifications/Requirements: Candidates with a high school diploma who possess excellent organizational, writing and communication skills; displays independent judgment or initiative, as well as advanced technology skills will be considered. The ideal candidate will have an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree. Demonstrated knowledge and related experience with archives and library functions is preferred. Candidates enrolled in a MLS program are welcome to apply.   

Schedule: Applicants must be available to work: Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday 2:30 - 8 pm, Wednesday 1 - 5 pm, and Saturdays 12 – 4 pm (September through May); approximately 23 hours per week.  Additional hours may be available.

Compensation: Once permanent, the employee will be eligible for one week paid vacation. Salary: $20/hour. Sick leave and pension benefits available.
