Bernards Township Library in Basking Ridge, NJ, has an immediate opening for an approachable, animated, and outgoing librarian with a sincere desire to serve the informational and recreational needs of teens. This position is full-time, 35 hours per week, including some evening and weekend hours plus one Sunday per month at the Reference Desk.

The Library is a vibrant and active cultural center in an increasingly diverse community and is much valued by Township residents for its wide range of materials and services. The budget for materials and programs is generous and is supplemented by funds from The Friends of the Library. Bernards Township Library is a member of Main, Inc. a consortium of more than 40 libraries and branches using a shared Polaris/LEAP system.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES: Under the direction of the Library Director the successful candidate will perform
professional duties such as:

  • Develops and implements teen programming. Collaborates with Program Coordinator and Children’s Supervising Librarian.
  • Oversees teen volunteer program including recruiting, training, scheduling, and communication.
  • Provides reference service, readers' advisory services and technical assistance to adults and teens.
  • Purchases, maintains and weeds all teen collections.
  • Works with other library departments, school media specialists, community agencies and organizations to provide services and programming to local teens.
  • Sends out regular promotions on teen programming and services.
  • Maintains teen page and calendar on library website.
  • Maintains social media presence for teens; contributes to library social media content.
  • Provides reader’s advisory to teens and parents. Advise, as needed, on age-appropriate material.
  • Creates a welcoming presence in the teen room.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: This position requires A Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited Library and Information Studies Program and a New Jersey Professional Librarian Certificate. Some experience in
Library work is preferred. Complete ease in the use of computers is essential. Experience working with teens desirable. Fluency in a language/languages other than English is a plus.
