Position Overview: Under the supervision of the Head of Technical Services and Technology, performs responsible professional work such as original and copy cataloging and assists with planning, organizing and maintaining technical services workflows and practices on a daily basis.  In addition, serves as the backup for the supervision of the proper functioning of technical services and technology.  Reference coverage responsibilities as well.

Primary Responsibilities:

 

  • Perform original and copy cataloging of a variety of formats using Sierra, OCLC and other tools and in compliance with AACR2, MARC, LCSH, and RDA standards and local cataloging procedures

 

  • Create authority records and work with MARC metadata in all formats as needed

 

  • Maintain the integrity of the library catalog by addressing Sierra database errors

 

  • Take the lead, determine work to be accomplished, coordinate assignments, and instruct technical Services staff in the performance of their duties

 

  • Recommend work procedures following professional standards; work with the Head of Technical Services and Technology to develop and update technical services policies and procedures

 

  • Provide supervision, training and support for technical services and technology staff and volunteers as needed

 

  • Revise processed materials on a daily basis

 

  • Maintain statistics on cataloging and processing activity

 

  • Perform Inventory using Sierra Circa to ensure the integrity of the library catalog

 

  • Work collaboratively with staff from other departments

 

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Covers the Reference Desk at least one evening a week and on rotating Saturdays.

 

  • Add and update content on the Library’s website and the Library’s intranet

 

  • Assists in selecting materials for acquisition and withdrawal, as assigned

 

  • Develop, create and present classes on library digital resources and services

 

  • Performs other duties, as assigned

 

Receives direct supervision from the Head of Technical Services and Technology

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of cataloging and classification practices, including AACR2, DDC, LCSH, MARC, RDA and awareness of emerging trends 
  • Knowledge and skill in various technologies
  • Knowledge of public library services and programs
  • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Ability to interact courteously and effectively with the public and with other staff
  • Ability to exhibit good judgement and respond in an effective manner to the concerns of library patrons
  • Ability to understand and interpret library policies, procedures, and rules
  • Ability to keep records and produce work accurately
  • Ability to organize work for efficient use of time
  • Ability to represent the library at professional and community meetings
  • Ability to work in a team environment and also independently

 

  • Minimum Qualifications: MLS or Information Science Degree is required. Professional experience working in a public library or similar environment is preferred.  Knowledge of and strong interest in assist with the Library’s technology operation are highly desirable.

Position includes evenings and Saturdays. 37 ½ hour work week.

East Orange is a diverse urban city with a population of approximately 64,000 located 25 minutes from New York by bus/rail.  The library has a main location and three branches.

Qualifications:

A librarian with a MLS from an ALA-accredited program with experience in technical services is preferred, but will consider an MLS candidate.

Salary and Benefits:

EOPL pays the NJLA minimum salary for Librarians.  The position offers medical benefits, paid vacation, personal and sick time. The library participates in the State PERS pension plan.
