Definition:

Under the close supervision of a Librarian 3 or higher level librarian, this Librarian 1 provides professional reference services to all three branches of state government; students, staff and mentors of Thomas Edison State University; New Jersey public libraries; and the general public.  They will design and present programs and training classes to meet the research needs of library users.  Serving as a collection specialist and primary contact person for reference support relative to subject specialty areas, the Librarian 1 may do the work involved in ordering, classifying and maintaining print and electronic resources in an assigned subject specialty area.  The successful candidate will be tech savvy and able to design and maintain website resources specific to their subject specialty area.

Requirements:

License- Possession of or eligibility for a valid New Jersey license as a Professional Librarian.

Examples of Work:

•    Provides reference service to all the communities served by the New Jersey State Library, using the full range of print and electronic resources available.

•    Does the work involved in reviewing, selecting, purchasing, classifying, and maintaining print and electronic resources in subject specific areas with a focus on the needs of the primary communities served by the New Jersey State Library.

•    Confers with unit supervisors and others regarding display and promotion of electronic subject specialty resources. 

•    Participates in digital projects to promote unique collections and holdings within the library.

•    Develops training and presentation materials; conducts training to instruct and support users on print and electronic collections.

•    Creates, updates, and maintains online research guides for subject specialty areas to enhance discoverability of print and electronic resources.

•    Responsible for budget of assigned special collections; reviews quarterly and monthly budget reports in order to responsibly expend funds in a timely manner.

•    Drafts correspondence in connection with the library.

•    Prepares technical, financial, statistical, and other reports, as required.

Knowledge:

•    Effective in the use of print materials and eResources used as part of reference services provided to patrons served by the New Jersey State Library

•    Knows library methods involved in selecting books and electronic resources

•    Basic knowledge of library budgeting systems

•    Basic knowledge of library cataloging or metadata classification practices.

Skills:

•    Strong written and verbal communication

•    Skilled in use of common office and library software programs 

•    Good at navigating patron relationships

Abilities:

•    Ability to instruct researchers in the use of the library and its resources.

•    Ability to understand the needs and functions of New Jersey State Library, especially in regard to subject specialty area.

•    Ability to work collaboratively with professional and paraprofessional staff

•    Ability to prepare and deliver presentations

•    Ability to prepare budget requests

•    Ability to prepare correspondence in connection with library services

•    Ability to prepare reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendation

•    Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.  American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication

Employees hired prior to September 1, 2011, who transfer from within the University/New Jersey State Library, or from another State of New Jersey appointing authority without a break in service greater than 7 days but who reside outside of the State of New Jersey, are not required to change their principal residence to New Jersey in order to comply with the Act.
