Definition:

Under the close supervision of a Librarian 3 or higher-level librarian, you will provide reference services to all three branches of state government; students, staff and mentors of Thomas Edison State University; New Jersey public libraries; and the general public.  On a regular basis you will be working across many subject areas including business, New Jersey history, law, and more.  You will present programs and training classes for library users.  Serving as a collection specialist, you may be identifying, ordering and maintaining print and electronic resources.  You should be tech savvy and thrive with the use of digital tools.

Requirements:

License- Possession of or eligibility for a valid New Jersey license as a Professional Librarian.

Examples of Work:

•    Provides reference service to all the communities served by the New Jersey State Library, using the full range of print and electronic resources available

•    Identifies, orders and maintains print and electronic resources in subject specific areas 

•    Participates in digital projects to promote unique library collection

•    Develops training and presentation materials to instruct users on print and electronic collections

•    Creatively engages users with research guides to enhance discoverability of resources

•    Responsible for budget of assigned collections

•    Prepares reports for users and administrators

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

•    Can effectively select and use eResources and print materials to respond to research requests

•    Basic knowledge of library cataloging or metadata classification practices

•    Strong written and verbal communication

•    Skilled in use of common library technology and software

•    Enjoys working with researchers both virtually and in person

•    Can instruct researchers on the use of library resources

•    Works collaboratively with library staff at all levels

•    Prepares and deliver engaging/interesting presentations

•    Prepares reports containing findings and recommendations

•    Reads, writes, speaks, understands, and communicates in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.  American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication

Employees hired prior to September 1, 2011, who transfer from within the University/New Jersey State Library, or from another State of New Jersey appointing authority without a break in service greater than 7 days but who reside outside of the State of New Jersey, are not required to change their principal residence to New Jersey in order to comply with the Act.
