SUMMARY/DEFINITION:

The New Jersey State Library seeks a Library Assistant with excellent organizational skills, who is detail-oriented to join the State Library Information Center’s Technical Services unit. Working under supervision, the library assistant will perform routine, non-professional library work of a varied nature directly related to the acquisition, organization, maintenance and distribution of library materials and related work as required.

 

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

 

NOTE: Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

Open and distribute mail as required.

Check in and file documents, pamphlets, newspapers, serials and other specialized materials as required.

Perform physical processing (covering, stamping, bar coding) of all new materials.

Prepare materials for binding, reinforcing and mending.

Shelve and shift books and other library materials as required.

Search and utilize the library catalog for acquisition, processing and related tasks, including projects.

Collect data for statistical reports.

Maintain essential records and files in an orderly condition.

Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and information systems used by the library.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

 

Ability to learn quickly from oral and written explanations and from demonstrations.

Ability to perform assigned library clerical work with strong attention to detail and organizational skill.

Ability to keep accurate, detailed library records and files.

Ability to understand library filing and classification systems.

Ability to shelve and shift library materials and retain proper sequence of items.

Ability to work harmoniously with colleagues and patrons of the library. 

Ability to communicate clearly.

Ability to understand the importance of following established procedures and regulations.

Ability to utilize a computer proficiently, including keyboarding.

Knowledge of basic computer skills.

Knowledge of Microsoft Windows and Office products.

Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.  American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

REQUIREMENTS

License: Appointees will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Physical Demands: The ability to lift 30 pounds and to push or pull book carts weighing 40 pounds, retrieve and return library materials to shelves, and hold and carry library materials.

Work Hours: 8:30am-4:30pm or 9am-5pm
