Part Time Library Assistant

 

The Kemmerer Library Harding Township seeks a friendly, positive, customer service-oriented person to join our small team as a Library Assistant in the Circulation Department. The person in this position helps patrons at our Circulation desk with checking out Library materials, signing up patrons for their library cards, aiding patrons with their accounts, answering the telephone and email, unpacking and packing materials for delivery to other libraries, emptying the book drops and other tasks. As it is such a small staff, flexibility, ability to work alone and easy going demeanor are key traits for the Library Assistant. Understanding the unique aspects of being part of a small library team and enjoyment working with the public and staff are important. 

Responsibilities:

  • Knowledge of the online circulation system (Polaris) including charging out all circulating materials to customers, collecting fines, registering new patrons, and issuing library cards. (Can be trained on this if necessary)
  • Assist the public in use of library resources, equipment, and technology
  • Answering questions (in person, telephone and via email) to respond to inquiries on library organization, collection, policies, room availability, programming, program registration and procedures
  • Open the building at the start of the business day and close the building at the end of the day. 
  • Understanding and willingness to familiarize yourself with current technologies, social media, library trends, and innovations
  • Simple reference and basic reader’s advisory
  • Performing basic assistance on library technology
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education, Experience and Abilities:

  • High School Diploma required
  • Knowledge of a variety of software (MS Office Suite, Google Suite, etc.) and web browsers to receive/send email, use calendar management, word processing, etc.
  • A background working in libraries or with the public is preferred
  • Excellent customer service skills, ability to work independently, team player, courteous, can-do attitude
  • As the candidate will do some shelving and moving of collection materials, the ability to push carts and lift up to 10 pounds is necessary.

The wage is $18/hour. Schedule is 2-4 mornings (10-2) or afternoons (2-5) per week, and one Saturday (10-1) per month. There is some flexibility with the schedule.
