Library Director
West Milford Township
The Library Board of Trustees is seeking a highly qualified individual to serve as Library Director for the West Milford Township Library. We seek a professional with demonstrated leadership qualities who will lead a staff of 15 employees.
West Milford is an 80 square mile, semi-rural community in northern Passaic County. It sits in the heart of the Highlands region and has a population of 26,000 with nearly 10,000 active library card holders. The library budget for 2022 is just over one-million dollars based on 1/3 of a mil funding. A new library building and community center was built in 2017.
Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master’s degree in Library or Information Science from an accredited college or university and a minimum of five years of library experience including work in circulation and reference areas, two years of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity. The successful candidate will possess the following skills and experiences:
- A thorough knowledge of library operations and management.
- Supervision of library staff including performance evaluation of personnel.
- A clear understanding of the director’s role as well as the role of the library board and how they effectively interact.
- Ability to motivate staff to provide excellent service to patrons.
- Strong experience in developing innovative and relevant library programming
opportunities for a diverse population of library patrons.
- Experience in the preparation of an annual budget that helps to accomplish the goals of
the library.
- Familiarity with the skills necessary to oversee maintenance of the physical plant.
- Understand the role of the director and the library in relation to the governing body.
- Ability to aggressively implement the Strategic Plan.
- Knowledge and experience in overseeing and expanding library collections.
- Experience reaching out to underserved, marginalized and shut-in communities.
- Oversee the library’s social media presence.
- Understand the needs of the community and lead the development of a balanced program
of library services.
- Represent the library’s participation in community events and actively work with local
groups, organizations and the Friends to promote the library as a community resource.
Salary: Regionally Competitive, Negotiable
