Our consortium was established in 1986, and consists of 38 public libraries throughout Middlesex, Monmouth, and Union counties, plus the library of Middlesex College. The consortium was created to operate a shared automation system for its members and to promote all aspects of cooperative projects and resource sharing so that a higher quality of library services would be provided to residents within our service area. We develop, maintain, and provide technological expertise; offer affordable, cost effective services to our member libraries; support additional value-added services in the areas of collection development, continuing education for library staff and trustees, marketing, consulting, and state and national library advocacy.

Principal Function

The Metadata Specialist is a full-time, 35-hour per week position that reports to the Systems Manager. This position is responsible for coordinating database record import, copy and original cataloging, and ensuring that cataloging standards are maintained. Additionally, this role is responsible for overseeing the design and coordination of the acquisitions procedures with our member libraries. Work is primarily performed at the LMxAC office with occasional visits to member libraries.

Responsibilities

  • Works with the Member Library staff, LMxAC staff, the Bibliographic committee and ILS software to help support the integrated library system (ILS)
  • Plans, develops, implements, and reinforces system metadata and cataloging policies, standards, procedures, and workflows for various formats
  • Performs original and copy cataloging
  • Imports bibliographic records for member libraries as needed
  • Confers with member library staff on cataloging quality and concerns
  • Coordinates the creation, acquisition, updating, and removal of metadata records including bibliographic and authority records
  • Coordinates with vendors to provide support to member libraries
  • Provides training to member library staff on cataloging procedures and in the operation of the acquisitions module
  • Maintains and generates reports for the acquisitions system
  • Updates and creates documentation for the use of staff
  • Oversees catalog integrity, addressing database errors
  • Acts as the organization’s liaison with the bibliographic committee and brings concerns to the committee for consideration and support toward resolution when needed
  • Supports the suite of applications that integrate with and search the ILS
  • Participates in review and evaluation of new software products
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Systems Manager

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS, MLIS)
  • Preferred two years of experience in cataloging
  • Proficiency with MARC standards
  • Knowledge of emerging BIBFRAME and linked data standards
  • Experience with ILS products and discovery layers
  • Experience working with acquisitions and/or finance systems preferred
  • Communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to produce written documentation and communications
  • Training or group instruction experience
  • Problem-solving skills

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Work is performed at the consortium headquarters and occasionally at member libraries throughout our service area of Middlesex, Union and Monmouth counties. This position requires an active New Jersey driver’s license and the ability to provide transportation to library sites. The position is scheduled for a 35-hour work week, and will be part of an on-call rotational schedule. Physical requirements include the ability to move around the facility, walk, sit, bend, climb, kneel, stoop, and carry; lift up to 15 pounds, or greater with assistance; and perform other efforts such as moving a computer and accompanying peripherals.

Salary and Benefits

This position starts at a salary range of $55k-$65k, commensurate with experience.
