Job Description

Coordinate circulation staff with the goals of running the department efficiently, satisfying library patrons and coordinating with BCCLS under the supervision of the Assistant Director. 
 

Essential Functions of the Job

The examples of duties and responsibilities below are intended to describe the general nature and level of work to be performed by the individuals in this position, rather than an exhaustive list.
 

Staff management 

  • Supervise functions performed by the circulation staff at the Main Library.
  • Supervise full-time and part-time staff consistent with Library policies.
  • Understand and effectively communicate circulation policy and procedures to staff.
  • Schedule Borrower Services staff to ensure that the Circulation desk at the Main library is adequately covered.
  • Reconcile and approve circulation timesheets.
  • Schedule and supervise volunteers.
  • Conduct regular staff meetings. 
  • Evaluate and motivate staff.  
     

Administration 

  • Generate applicable reports daily and as requested by Director/Assistant Director.
  • Work in concert with the Library Director on Borrower Services budget.
  • Manage department within budget. 
  • Reconcile cash drawer and prepare for deposit. 
  • Prepare monthly circulation statistics.
  • In concert with the Library Director/Assistant Director establish policies, strategies and plans for Borrower Services.
     

Patron services 

  • Interact in a positive way with individuals.
  • Handle problems and conflicts calmly, ably and effectively.
  • Contact patrons to reconcile lost items and payment of outstanding bills.
  • Responsible for the Home Assisted Services (H.A.S.) program.
  • Schedule and proctor exams for students.

Collection development 

  • Maintain collections and displays. 
  • Oversee the processing, linking and weeding of periodicals.

Professional development  

  • Attend BCCLS circulation meetings and communicate relevant information to the circulation staff.
  • Develop skills by attending seminars and meetings

Other duties, as assigned. 
 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong leadership, management, and supervisory skills.
  • Knowledge of the theories, objectives, principles and techniques of librarianship, including the Dewey Decimal System.
  • Working knowledge of, or ability to learn, BCCLS and other tools (including Polaris/LEAP, Lending and Museum Key, Google for Work) needed to meet job objectives. 
  • Welcoming behaviors including friendliness, cooperation, creativity, patience and enthusiasm. 
  • Ability to be detail oriented and coordinate multiple department functions. 
  • Work harmoniously with co-workers and a diverse and varied clientele.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate and direct work and to exercise initiative and good judgment. 
  • Excellent customer service skills and the ability to calmly resolve conflicts.
  • Familiar with the concepts of equity, diversity, and inclusion and ability to apply an EDI lens to all aspects of library work. 
     

Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree or MLS with NJ Professional Librarian Certificate
  • Minimum of five years of library or customer service experience.
  • Current knowledge of library trends and innovations.

Salary

Bachelors Degree only: $63,213

MLS Degree: $71,740
