Part-Time Publicity and Circulation Assistant

The Mountainside Public Library seeks a part-time Publicity/Circulation Assistant who will be responsible for developing and implementing press and social media content that is designed to engage users and stimulate interest in the Library.  This position will assist with publicity for library programs and services and may require some flexible scheduling to periodically cover actual events. This position also will have regularly scheduled shifts at the circulation desk.

checking library materials in and out, assisting the public in the use of library resources and equipment, issuing library cards, answering telephones, and opening and closing the library.  

Responsibilities

Publicity

  • Develop content, monitor responses and interact on major social media platforms
  • Provide reports and statistics on social media activity
    • In conjunction with the Library Director and other staff as needed, develop a monthly PR/social media schedule
  • Post events on newspaper websites and in print
  • Provide backup assistance for website updates and slide show at circulation /
  • Monitor social media trends, tools and applications and other social media sites
  • Assist in preparing press releases and flyers

Circulation

  • Check library materials in and out
  • Assist the public in the use of library resources and equipment
  • Issue new library cards
  • Answering telephones
  • Open and close the library.  

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Experience using social media in a professional setting
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data and social media feedback
  • Copywriting, fluency with products such as Canva as well as Microsoft Office software
  • Detail-oriented
  • Ability to develop a social media strategy addressing issues of design, engagement, promotion, and conversation
  • Have a professional, friendly manner
  • Be a team player
  • Be able to multitask and manage interruptions
  • Be able to stand for long periods of time, stoop, and handle some light lifting.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High school diploma
  • Proficiency using major social media apps
  • Understanding of social media posting strategy and content tailoring
  • Proficiency in all Microsoft Office software including Word, Excel, and Publisher, PowerPoint
  • Customer service experience

Preferred:

  • Copywriting
  • Proofreading
  • Graphic Design
  • Experience with Canva
  • Experience with Constant Contact
  • Library or retail experience

Schedule:

This position is 12 hours per week divided into 3- or 4-hour shifts. Shifts will include either Monday or Thursday evening until 8pm, Thursday afternoon until 6pm (if not working Thursday evening), and either Friday morning or Friday afternoon until 5pm. The exact schedule will be determined upon hiring. Approximately one Saturday per month is required in addition to regularly scheduled hours.

Compensation:

  • Hourly rate: $16.00-18.00 per hour depending upon qualifications and experience
  • Sick leave in accordance with NJ State requirements.
  • Limited holiday pay.
