Older Adult Services Librarian Full-Time 

Senior Librarian (2-4 years of experience) Salary: $68,377.30  o

Principal Librarian (4+ years of experience) Salary: $77,641.20

Come and join a new and expanding team of Library professionals as we reinvent the Edison Public Library for the 21st century. Located in Central NJ, with a multicultural, multilingual, and diverse population of 107,000, the Library currently has three library branches and bookmobile service. We are rebuilding our Library from the bottom-up and the top-down to create an environment of learning, exploration, innovation and fun for the entire community. Our North Edison and Main Library Branches currently are undergoing a transformation in layout and expansion. This is a library system where anything is possible as we move towards a patron-centric view of programs and services. 

The successful candidate will be an innovative, creative, outgoing and experienced Librarian to join our team and work with us as we expand our programs and services for older adults. This is a newly created position; which will primarily focus on those aged 55 thru 105, their companions and caregivers. This position will work approximately 50 percent in the Library and 50 percent out in the Edison community. A valid driver’s license is essential for this position. Experience working with this age group in a variety of settings is advantageous. The Older Adult Services Librarian reports directly to the Branch Managers and, Indirectly, to the Library Director. 

Qualifications for a Successful Candidate: 

• Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited library school 

• A Public Librarian’s Professional Certificate issued by the State of New Jersey

 • Experience working with older adults and/or outreach programs in diverse communities; a degree or coursework in gerontology is highly desirable

 • Experience working with and/or supervising volunteers

 • Excellent communications and customer service skills 

• Good presentation and programming skills

 • Reliable and task-oriented self-starter

 • Candidates must be flexible, able to handle multiple competing priorities and tasks, adaptable to change • Ability to travel to Edison Public Library branches and offsite locations

 • Strong teamwork and teambuilding skills and respect for co-workers

 • Good time-management skills 

• Proven digital literacy skills including experience with office software and ability to adapt to new technologies 

• Basic understanding of current and emerging library technology, trends, and public library issues 

• May require the ability to carry a laptop & projector as needed 

• Required to work evenings and weekends (includes Saturdays and Sundays) 

Daily Responsibilities:

 • Develop in library programming for older adults using such models as the “Creative Aging” and Retirement Institutes • Develop a “Memory Café” program for older adults with Dementia, their families and caregivers 

• Initiate a Homebound Service to Edison residents

 • Develop a Books-to-Go Program to deliver materials to the Township’s Senior Center as well as other senior locations and facilities around town

 • Organize Words and Memory programs for those older adults located in Nursing Home and Assistive Care Facilities who are unable to visit the Library 

• Present Digital Literacy programs in the Library and in the community geared towards older adults 

• Develop partnerships with local, county and state agencies and organizations that serve older adults such as AARP, Alzheimer’s Association, Area Agency on Aging 

• Attend workshops, programs and conferences related to the work of the program

 • Organize the Older Adults Advisory Board 

• Provide professional and excellent reference and reader’s advisory services to diverse patrons 

• Identify community partners and make referrals to relevant community based organizations, government agencies and training opportunities 

• Participate in outreach and community events off site as needed 

• Other related duties, as required 

Education: 

Master's Degree from an American Library Association Accredited college or university Hours: 35 hours; includes a rotation of hours during the week, evening and weekends (includes Saturdays and Sundays) Benefits: Excellent benefits package including life, health, dental, and vision insurance; vacation, sick, personal, and holidays; after six (6) months, staff are eligible to join the union.
